aren't an integral multiple of the multiword size,
though. finding
peaks without branching is very attractive, and a routine integrating
both would be very useful.
computing peaks and metering in general is the single most
computationally expensive thing that Ardour does (outside of certain
plugins). code to vectorize this would be a truly significant
contribution.
