also, when i think of road driving signs used to

uphill or downhill sections, my recollection is that in the US and in
Europe they obey this right=up association if they actually show the
slope.
IIRC correctly, it's different for ascending and downward slopes.
left is start, right is end, which could be up or down, at least in
germany:
