For me ATI is
preferred, because free (as in Freedom) drivers are
availably, and even the non-free ones work very well.
I don't see any difference between ATI and nVidia. Both provide
binary-only drivers for 3D. For both, there is open source 2D only
driver available ("radeon" vs "nv"). This is the case for any
reasonably
recent GPU.
