rhythmn is
always based on one integral periodic 'pulse'. if
time is not divisible by this atom, there is no musical time.
I think there are some counter examples, eg. Reich's phase music? How
about african polyrhythms? I'm not sure but I dont think the time unit is
integral in those cases. Seriously, there are good technical reasons for
representing everything
you can with floats.
just as there's good reasons to represent things like 1/3 with
fractions, right?
