This should have been improved. If you still have difficulties with
the latest ALSA release, please report a bug.

PORTABILITY:
it's cool that generally considered better solution (alsa versus oss)
seems to be winning but that brings us to linux being windows:-) I mean
alsa is linux specific while oss is fairly portable solution.
Why don't you use cross-platform libraries if portability matters?
It's much better than sticking with OSS API.
