Hello Adrian and thank you for the link, it seems to be an
interesting chip.
To bad it does not have an ethernet interface. Maybe one can use
one of the micrel chips below (there is drivers in the kernel for
them at least) ?
But if the network interface can be solved it could be a good
solution for your adat - ethernet idéa [2].
This has onboard ethernet and USB (at 480Mbit), and runs linux.

PS: personally I think that going for the TCAT DICE would be a smarter
move as this chip has been designed for pro-audio and lot's of channels.
It should not be too difficult to interface it to something that has
gigabit-ethernet if you really want to. But there are plenty of
technical reasons to choose firewire over ethernet (or USB).
