I've not worked with that one in particular, but I have with a larger
one. They're really easy to work with as they're effectively just
generic x86 boards. Some of the larger ones are fanless.
I've been wanting to put together an effrects box with one, but just
don't have the time.
Right. Not so so expensive for such a small form factor
and x86, still a
bit on the steep side.
I did a bit more research and barring the size of the board I'd say
something like the Epia 5000

should be a very good choice. Not too complex to finish, onboard
audio, fanless and such. Even a pci slot ;). Quite cheap, around €90.
No idea how capable the soundcard is, but I believe it's tested in low
latency situations atleast?

Low end embedded CPUs don't have a MMU so
they run ucLinux instead of

need a JTAG. Probably not good for a first embedded system.
Efika is a much easier system to get started on.

It is $99.
Based on the Freescale MPC5200B - PowerPC with MMU and FPU.
There is AC97 audio on the board.
It has a PCI slot so that you can add a video card or build your own
audio hardware.
You have to provide a standard PC power supply. Any old one will do,
the Ekifa needs hardly any power.
For $300 there is a version in a case with power supply and video
card. It is very small and silent. It's $300 because it uses an
expensive power supply that is fanless.
Google around for Ekifa, lots of hackers have made mods to them.
