just annouced that they
will be acquired by Pinnacle Systems.

you know what i find so odd about this? somehow, i guess i grew up
with the idea that well-known companies should be buying lesser-known
companies. anybody who does anything with computers and audio knows
steinberg. who has ever heard of pinnacle systems outside of the
broadcast world? anyway, it looks to me like pinnacle want to give
avid a run for their money.
i am also mildly suprised by the value of the deal. steinberg is
effectively valued at US$24 million. its a huge confirmation, if ever
there was one, of the tiny niche market that computer music
represents. steinberg has to be one of the pre-eminent companies in
the field, and have been in business in some form or another for more
than a decade. that they are worth only US$24M at this point says very
little about them and a lot about the size of the (paying) market for
these products.
