I'm tempted to agree. Particualrly the interpediate peak thing, if the
compressors gain slope is appropriatly shallow then the output waveform
will still have the intermediate peak in it. If your DA converter is
broken, you can't really fix that up in software.
According to a collegue, there was a study of consumer hardware DACs for
this behaviour, and there was a mix of results, some reconstruct the
correct curve, some produce an over, but not correct curve and some clip.
From what he can remember it mostly depended on the
manufacturer.
