I am not asking for a solution. I am asking for
a clue. The man page
to aplay does not mention what a PCM actually is. It just tells you
to list them with -L.
This is my main gripe with ALSA documentation: it often uses terms
and concepts that are defined nowhere. The english terms used for
some concepts can be hard to decode as well. This is a real problem
with e.g. the doxygen pages for the pcm and seq APIs.
