How easy is that to use in practice though? With a mouse, and
particularly with a touch screen, it's not that easy to do a purely
vertical movement without introducing lots of horizontal "noise" that
will surely hamper your attempts at fine settings?!

This saves a modifier, and is more discoverable for it (users are pretty
likely to figure this out by mistake), as well as accurately usable with
one hand. Could be applied to touch screens, as well.
this been around in several different audio apps for at least a
decade. just a FYI :)
