I don't see any difference between ATI and nVidia. Both provide
binary-only drivers for 3D. For both, there is open source 2D only
driver available ("radeon" vs "nv"). This is the case for any
reasonably recent GPU.
The difference is that the free ATI driver supports hardware
accelerated 3D.
Only up to the Radeon 9200, though.
