OK, I have been around BIOS now, and changed the monitor connection as
well (so I can see what I write ... )
I have no GL whatsoever now, but - lo and behold - Clearlooks is
actually snappy? I wouldn't have believed that without trying it out.

Lots of info on the web about this, but most of it looks pretty old.
Xorg logs (/var/log/Xorg.0.log on debian at least) are usually
informative when stuff like this is happening. Render accel is probably
not working, or maybe compositing is involved...
