I once had this problem with Slackware 12.1 stock
kernel. Recompiling
it with some ALSA patches worked, and upgrading to a newer kernel
version did the trick, too.
I am not so much interested in solving my individual problem, I'd
rather think about how to implement some kind of project that helps
users to debug such things easily and provide the most useful feedback
to the developers.
