Splines would give us 6 dB/octave less discontinuity artifacts than
linear interpolation, or something like that.

Yeah, but I think there are more "hidden" issues with this than we
realized at first. It probably won't help sensitive algorithms all
that much, and isn't needed for the less sensitive algorithms.
