[linux-audio-dev] Linux friendly, portable digital recording devices?

Hey all, We are looking for some portable digital recording devices with the following criteria: - very small - durable - near $100 ($100-150) - usb compatible - linux + windows friendly - mic-in with a reasonable signal-to-noise ratio - descent quality recordings - battery powered We intend to distribute about 10 - 20 of these units to radio journalists in Mali, whom will use these devices to collect material for their programs which they can then edit in Audacity and broadcast on the air. We are looking at devices such as the iRiver 190T Any one have any experience with such devices, in particular using them with linux? [linux-audio-dev] WXWidget/Portmidi cross platform dev

Happy new year 2005 to all LA fellows ! Recently I have contacted a manufacturer (WaveIdea) to help them adapting their hardware (a great midi Interface unit http://www.waveidea.com/en/products/bitstream_3x/) on Linux and they are very opened to collaborate with the community. They are developping with the cross platform libraries WXWidget and Portmidi, libraries used for example by "Audacity". they have two softs. - a proprieritary soft : the firmware upgrader, I have compiled it on Linux and it looks like it will work very well on this platform. - a "future" open source soft (I succeed in convincing them to make it open source) that has not been developped completely. It is the configuration tool of the unit. The developpment should consist in : - linking the UI action to the low level functions that should send/receive Sysex between the soft and the unit. - Improve the UI itself. Anyone interested to help finishing this open source soft is welcome, just contact me. Philippe

Thanks for the responses - the reason I didn't give more details is mainly because I don't know where to begin troubleshooting. Firstly let me explain why I need this to work on knoppix. I boot knoppix from a customized image on a compact flash card, so I've been able to add and customize a lot of software, and it runs all sorts of things for me like a webserver, proxy, browser, etc etc. I have a dedicated computer at my house that is always running knoppix (without harddrive) which is always on since there is no harddrive to eventually crash. For my serious audio work I have another computer that runs midi software I've been using since the late 80's (Dr. T's) in an Atari ST emulator, and this system does everything I need for now. Although I've been dabbling with Agnula and ALSA (with no luck yet), I still need to get the knoppix system working with rosegarden2 so that we will have a midi scratchpad to save song ideas with, to be later imported into a different system with rosegarden4 or cakewalk sonar or whatever. OK here are some details on my system. The computer is a gateway P2/266, and I have three soundcards (and a usb interface) that I've tried booting with, but knoppix doesn't autoconfigure the midi ports on any of them, although knoppix is able to identify and configure the audio portion of the soundcards. My hunch is that I should be able to manually get the midi portion to be recognized if I knew what to do. The soundcards I've tried are 1) a digital research ESS1869 ISA card, 2) an AVANCE LOGIC als-100 ISA card, 3) yamaha YMF-724 PCI card, and 4) a midiman midisport 1x1 USB interface. When I run rosegarden2 (that comes included in knoppix), the midi setup has /dev/null as the midi device. If I change it to /dev/midi, or /dev/sequencer, it says "device invalid or busy" when I run sndconfig with the yamaha pci card installed, it says "the yamaha corp ymf-724 (pci) is not currently supported" although I still hear audio through the wav output. when I run sndconfig with the ESS1869 ISA card installed, it says "no PnP or PCI soundcards were found - choose from list" then I choose "ESS1868 audiodrive" from the list, then I get a segmentation fault. I checked my /etc/modules.conf - I don't see an entry "snd-seq-oss", but the top of the file says run "update-modules" instead of editing modules.conf directly. So thats where I am now; I don't know what modules I need loaded (snd-seq-oss?) and I don't know where to find or how to add modules (yet). What can I try next? UPnP (http://upnp.org) seems to have been adopted by many/most producers of audio streaming devices. I am looking for Open Source Media Server software for Linux which is accessable by UPnP AV Media Renderers. Any suggestions? [linux-audio-dev] need tips to get OSS midi configured

I am in desperate need of advice! I don't know if this post is appropriate here but for months I have been seeking info from different linux audio forums/lists, and have gotten nowhere. I have a knoppix installation that includes rosegarden2 and OSS drivers and am trying to get OSS to recognize the midiports. The midiports are not recognized upon bootup. How can I configure/check the midi port configuration for the OSS drivers? Yes I know that rosegarden4 blows away rosegarden2, and ALSA is the way to go, but since knoppix includes rosegarden2 and OSS, I think it would be easier for me to get this working than switch to ALSA and new software. I have tried several midi interfaces/soundcards which I know are supposed to work (ISA, PCI, and USB) Any advice would be much appreciated! __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
