Heya! Anyone doing (audio) infrastructure work on Linux? If so, please make sure to join us at the Linux Plumbers Conference in Portland/Oregon in September. I will be doing an Audio track there and would like to make sure that everyone who does audio infrastructure work will submit a paper, or at least attend, or maybe just know about this conference! It's a conference about the kernel-userspace interfacing, about the lower levels in our software stack. Sources of Paul "mda" Kellett's plugins have been released

Hi list, not sure if this was mentioned here before (I hardly find the time to read the LA* lists regularly these days), but someone from IRC let me know that the VST/VSTi plugin suite by Paul Kellett has been released by its author as source, see here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=230958 I don't have a Windows-based audio system so I cannot judge about the quality of his plugins, but I am pretty confident (from what I know and read about his work) that these could be pretty fine, perhaps an interesting alternative or addendum to, say, the swh-plugins. Should be a cornucopia for interested LADSPA/LV2 porters, anyway :-). As it seems, there is already a binary of a ported package at http://linux-vst.com/download/mda_linux.tar.gz No idea who managed to convince Paul to do this, but big thanks to both of you for arranging this! This should be a quite valuable resource, for DSP coders and finally also for users. Regards, Frank

starting out with tux audio

I'm a newbie to audio in linux. I can code in C, and I know that if you $cat /dev/dsp you can see your microphone feeding weird shit into this sound device. I've also read that this device is encoded as 8-bit unsigned, and I know the binary math of that format. I'm currently coding on Ubuntu Hardy. I'm looking for some helpful tips on two simple processes, for which I'll be very grateful: 1. What are these weird "{{PP--"characters in /dev/dsp and how do I convert them to some numerical form that I can understand and play with? Are they ASCII representations of 8-bit unsigned numbers? How do I convert this to samples? (I know a "little" DSP theory, but kindly assume that I'm not very good). 2. I'd like to feed a pure sine wave to /dev/audio, and then another wave and mix them together to hear some beats. Basically, I want to try out raw additive synthesis using C and feeding cool arrays to either /dev/audio or /dev/dsp. [ANN] libsmf-1.1

Version 1.1 of libsmf can be downloaded from: http://pin.if.uz.zgora.pl/~trasz/libsmf/libsmf-1.1.tar.gz Libsmf is a library for loading and writing Standard MIDI Files, i.e. files with the ".mid" extension. The only dependancy is glib. It was tested under Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris. Please note that, by default, libsmf is built with lots of asserts, which make it slower; for example, inside smf_save, there is some code that loads the newly saved file and compares it with what it was supposed to save. recording impulse responses

Hello list, later that summer I will have the chance to record some impulse responses of some ancient technical gear like radios, grammophones etc. The question is, where to start with the recording chain: e.g an IR from the "Volksempfaenger"-Radio: does it make sense to play the sweep into an transmitter (of the very same period) and record the output with the microphone near the speaker of the radio? Or would one prefer to play the sweep diretly to the amplifier of the radio? How do I get a meaningful IR from a grammophone: start with the needle? try to find a vinyl record with a sweep on it? I am quite curious about your opinions on that subject, or any hint to some literature, I have not found yet.... Cheers, Michael

jack-rack doesn't build against Debian 'etch's GTK+ libraries

Hi, While trying to compile jack-rack on a fresh Debian 'etch' installation, I ran into this problem: jack_rack-ui.o: In function `ui_init_gui': /usr/local/src/jack-rack-1.4.7/src/ui.c:249: undefined reference to `gtk_tool_item_set_tooltip_text' I eventually realised that this function isn't implemented in the libgtk2.0-dev package in this Debian release (GTK+ v2.8.20). The offending changes in CVS are here: http://jack-rack.cvs.sourceforge.net/jack-rack/jack-rack/src/ui.c?r1=1.27&r… The revision log shows that this change was introduced 1.4.7, and 1.4.6 builds fine, as expected. jack-rack's 'configure' script only checks for GTK+ >= 2.0.0. According to the documentation, the missing function didn't exist until 2.12: http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/stable/GtkToolItem.html#gtk-tool-item-se… Debian packages jack-rack anyway, and anyone compiling latest jack-rack from source shouldn't mind installing newer GTK libs. But I thought I'd mention it in case anyone else runs into this problem. I imagine 'configure.ac' ought to be updated to reflect the dependency on GTK+ >= 2.12.0 instead of 2.0.0 as previously. Packaging advice

Hi there, I have written a MIDI step sequencer that uses the JACK MIDI APIs, and i'm just about ready to unleash it on the world. However, i'm no expert on packaging for Linux - i use Ubuntu personally, and can probably get an ubuntu .deb together easily enough, but am wondering what people do to get their apps packaged and supported on other distros?
