That being said, I don't know too many "enthusiasts" who spend their
spare time writing their own
plugins. :)

I'm looking at professional from the perspective that if you spend more
than 20 hours of your time per week working on Linux Audio then you
should be considered a professional.
There are other factors that would qualify someone as a Linux
professional. Just because you don't get paid in money doesn't mean it
is not a job.
Every successful organisation I have ever heard of has financial
commitments. What makes us any different? If anything we have more of an
obligation to provide a community funded intiative as money is not
supposed to be the driving force in our motivation. Therefore we
shouldn't care if we spend a little as a group.
BTW. I was not suggesting that we advertise in SoS. I thought that quote
had direct relevance to the target audience of who we would be
advertising to.
I have no definitive idea of where or what would be the best media to
advertise. I have many ideas of what should be said though.

Steve you were wondering what the basic rate is for Sos. I think that is
a good standard to work from.

I believe firmly that taking control here will benefit all areas of
Linux Multimedia and the community at large.
My point is that rather than simpy take out ads
in magazines like Sound on Sound, actual articles would probably do a
lot to help.
Some of us have really been trying for a while now. I think they would
have to do something if they were overwhelmed with success stories from
our community. But that requires people to pull finger and actually
write to the publications and inform them. A campaign along these lines
could be extremely effective at gathering publicity.
I will write something up as guidelines and add it to the openads site.
However, remember a picture tells a thousand words.
