Qtractor is free, open-source software, distributed under the terms of
the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2 or later.
Change-log:
- While moving multi-selected MIDI events around the clip editor (aka
piano-roll), with help of keyboard arrow keys, that is, was not clear
which one was the so-called "anchor" event, the one which positioning
gets honored for snap-to-beat business. Not anymore: the anchor event
now defaults to the earliest in time or the one the user's last
point(-click)ed.
- MIDI control observer pattern implementation has sneaked in, making it
ready for the so-called and long-awaited "MIDI Learn" feature and
arbitrary MIDI controller assignment, for plugin parameters in particular.
- MMC DEFERRED PLAY doesn't cause transport state to stop if currently
rolling (mitigating bug #3067264).
- Audio clip merge processing might have been skipping a few initial
frame blocks, now fixed.
- Clip selection and plugin parameter hash optimization.
- Anti-glitch audio clip macro fade-in/out fixed again.
- New clip fade-in/out slopes (curves) are introduced, partially adapted
and refactored from those easing equations of Robert Penner's fame.
- Clip fade-in/out non-linear slopes are now shown as actual WYSIWYG curves.
- Escape key now closes generic plugin widgets as ever found usual
elsewhere.
- Picking nits: unselect current track when clicking on any gray empty
area, also accessible from a new menu item: Track/Navigate/None.
- A nasty and deadly MIDI resolution overflow has been finally fixed,
allowing for long MIDI sequences (1h+) to load correctly on 32bit
machines from now on (was perfectly fine on 64bit though).
- MIDI editor selection hash optimization in face of reasonably huge
event sequences.
- MIDI controller mapping finally refactored to support some other MIDI
event types than just CC (0xBn) ones.
- Nitpicking fix: corrected main track-list (left pane) display when no
track is currently selected.
- libX11 is now being added explicitly to the build link phase, as seen
necessary on some bleeding-edge distros eg. Fedora 13, Debian 6. (fixing
bug #3050944).
- New audio metronome bar and beat sample gain options.
- Progressively, the observer pattern is being finally introduced,
targeting all potentially automation controls and widgets as plain
ground-zero for the (ultra-)long overdue automation feature.
- MIDI controller mapping of still non-existing tracks were being
implicitly assigned to the last, highly numbered, existing track. Now fixed.
- Moving from old deprecated Qt3'ish custom event post handling into
regular asynchronous signal/slot strategy.
- Muting/soloing tracks while playback is looping was leaving current
audio clip out-of-sync whenever that same track is later un-muted on any
other preceding clip. Now hopefully fixed.
- MIDI Clock support makes its first appearance.
- All tempo (BPM) calculations are now compliant to the MIDI
conventional equivalence between beat and quarter note (1/4, crotchet)
as common standard time division.
- Automatic audio time-stretch option is not enabled by default anymore.
- Standard warning Apply button is now only shown when dismissing dialog
changes are actually valid.
- Make sure non-dedicated metronome and player buses are properly reset
and reopen when changing regular audio buses (hopefully fixing bug item
#3021645 - Crash after changing audio bus).
- Hopefully, an outrageously old bug got squashed away, which was
causing random impromptu crashes, most often when importing audio clips
while looping and play-head is any near the loop end point.
- General standard dialog buttons layout is now in place.
- Fixed main track view off-limits play-head positioning.
- Main tool-bar Time and Tempo spin-boxes, may now have their colors
correct, as for most non-Qt based theme engines (ie. Gnome). Green text
on black background has been and still is the the intended aspect design ;)
- MIDI file import and internal sequence representation has been changed
to be inclusive on all bank-select (CC#0,32) and program-change events
which were previously discarded while honoring MIDI track properties.
Interleaved SysEx events are now also preserved on their original
sequence positions instead of squashing a duplicate into the MIDI bus
SysEx setup.
- Attempt to include the VeSTige header by default, as for minimal VST
plugin support.
- JACK transport support has been slightly rewritten, in fact the sync
callback is now in effect for repositioning.
- The MIDI clip editor (piano roll) widget won't be flagged as a tool
window anymore.
- A tempo adjustment tool is making inroads from the menu, as
Edit/Clip/Tempo... (factory shortcut: F7).
- Audio tracks auto-monitoring is now effective on playback.
- Make sure to ask whether a dirty MIDI clip should be saved, upon
resizing or stretching its edges (fixes bug #3017723).
- Backward and Forward transport commands are now taking additional
stops on loop points.
- Attempt to optimize track solo/mute redundant transactions, in special
regard to MIDI track events which were being duplicated on soloing and
temporarily muted on unsoloing.

the f&d peak, female nouns are really running out
maybe i'll take on your once suggestion Ralf, to switch after bikini
bottom characters.
The next half year I'll do supervise elementary school kids, I prefer
this to a job as an audio engineer, I could do instead. So, I guess
bikini bottom characters for naming Qtractor releases could be an
advantage, if I should be ask to give the kids an understanding of using
a computer creative.

Rui, since it was me who more or less pushed you into the f&d pattern,
I just expect you to go on with it. If you spend 1% of the time you
devote to developing Qtractor on this I'm sure you will find new names.

Rui -- Once again thanks for all your recent updates. I tried out two
"competitors" recent releases and a beta with midi enhancements. Yours
wins by far with the quickest first-launch to sound output, such as
when I was testing it out with zynaddsubfx and fluidsynth dssi plugins
on a new meego netbook install. In the competitors, stunning and
full-featured as they are, I felt a sense of accomplishment after
navigating through umpteen layers of byzantine menus and dialogs just
to get the DAW midi inputs to light up when i played a keyboard. And
then I was all "screw this... back to qtractor...." There was no
obvious way to launch any of the myriad LV2 or DSSI plugins I've
installed and get sound output for a midi track -- not like the old
"click and go" in qtractor.
However, with popularity comes stupid questions, so here goes:
(1) Any hints on customizing qtractor qt/X/etc for use on a smaller
screen (1024x600 10.1" display) : see

(2) I 've got subversion installs of all your progs, so I usually make
the day of your announcement a good day to try a new svn up & compile.
(btw, r1687 builds and runs beautifully). Recently in compiling one of
your progs (qmidinet) I found out the hard way that I needed to do
"make clean ; autoreconf -i -f ; ./configure ; make" in order to see
the updated "about" page in the resources, even after previously
updating, cleaning and recompiling from subversion.
Is there a better way of doing this, or is there some automatic (make)
way that a subversion revision update could automatically trigger
updating the configuration if needed. Of course, it might all be there
already, as I really haven't been using Qt for very long....

(1) A way for meego to popup new non-modal application level
windows, such as "Mixer" and "Connection" in qtractor -- in the same
"screen" as the one that launched it. Alternately is there a way for
these windows in qtractor/qsynth/qjackctl to become panels in the
existing windows?
(2) A way for existing application icons in qtractor to be displayed
smaller, with less border/whitespace, so that they can fit more
densely in a panel. Is there an appropriate way to set different kinds
of application defaults /styles/skins for using such Qt4 applications
on a lower resolution screen -- such as referencing display DPI?
(3) A way for Qt4 application icon panels such as used in qtractor, to
be rendered as dynamic "mouseover" popups, or "window-shade" style
overlays, providing the functionality of the application icons,
without taking up static real estate on a cramped screen?

why? doen't it fit on whatever screen size you throw it in? it might
default to an 800x600 one, iirc :) but i guess your problem is sth else

Correct. You have to remove most of the action/icons that you get used
to having. The big problem is there's a lot of whitespace and they end
up taking more than half the screen. If there was a way of jamming
them all together more, so that each icon is the whole button with
only a narrow border, it would work better on a cramped screen. Some
of the things just take getting used to -- like being sent off to a
different "screen" everytime a popup window is activated (e.g. mixer,
connections) and having to navigate back to the main qtractor window.
An option to allow "Mixer" or "Connections" windows to appear as
panels like "Messages" would be helpful for small screen use.
Also some of the configuration dialogs are coming up bigger than the
screensize. So you have to Tab-down to the invisible "ok" or "cancel"
and press return, and hope you got the right one. It's possible that
maybe the part of the dialog i need to configure it for small-screen
use is happening off-screen. :-)

other than using kb-accels <enter> to reach "Ok" or <esc> for

others clip the text displaying the value (which also happens for me
on my Fedora/KDE4.4 desktop, but its more legible because i use a
larger font normally).
Here's how I have the screen layout/fonts customized to make things
work on meego:

a lot of keyboard accelerators for expert users given the target is

Yes, this is exactly what I was looking for -- a simple way to switch
to a more reasonable-looking style.
Is there a way to set this style in ~/.config/rncbc.org/Qtractor.conf
, or a global variable I can set to effect this change for certain
programs without affecting "stock meego" apps? I ended up modifying
/usr/local/share/applications/qtractor.desktop to get this style on a

application level windows launched from qtractor/qjackctl to a
different meego screen -- stopped happening once I setup smaller
fonts, or perhaps after enabling "Keep child windows always on top" in
options.
Here's the new screenshots, playing something that causes xruns in
ZynAddSubFx due to too much MIDI happening, and a too-complex voice.
Something I recorded on the desktop and played back on the netbook
just to see if it could keep up. Picking a simpler voice still gives
Xruns but it's mostly inaudible:

(seems like the easy solution for doing audio on meego is to wait for
Fedora 14, which will support the Meego desktop and Netbooks as a
"default configuration" (

) and on which I'd expect the upcoming F14 PlanetCCRMA realtime kernel
will run and allow this underpowered platform to perform synthesis
reliably (?). Note that there's no such problems if I stick to just
MIDI via USB-connected MIDI converters talking to old-fashioned MIDI
synths and samplers; Regarding Audio Xruns in Jack, I haven't checked
to see whether a external USB audio interface has better or worse
performance, compared to onboard "Intel" sound w/ Realtek ALC272
codec...)

Yes, this is exactly what I was looking for -- a simple way to switch
to a more reasonable-looking style.

there's yoshimi, a linux only zyn derivative that does jack midi & audio
better - <http://sourceforge.net/projects/yoshimi/files/>. Use 0.058.1,
don't touch the "experimentals").

Actually, I like the plastique style enough that I set it as my
desktop KDE default style instead of Oxygen. Solves the problem across
all of your Qt4 apps, makes the clipped text in qtractor's mixer
spinlabels disappear, and makes the rest of KDE work & look nicer as
well! It also seems to fix a taskbar/plasma graphics glitching bug
that the KDE people kept blaming on my totally generic Fedora ATI
graphics drivers and/or my Radeon HD3300 integrated on my Mobo... even
though it only happened in Qt4 apps. Bug seems gone now.... Thanks for
the suggestion!
Changing to plastique style in Meego's qtconfig-qt4 didn't have any
adverse affects on the meego desktop or default apps (since they don't
actually use Qt and use gnome or clutter).

Once again thanks for the expertise and confirmation this is a
problem. For some strange reason a 4x 3.4G 64 bit system didn't seem
to have any Xrun problems with even the hairiest DSSI zynaddsubfx
voices, so I didn't realize this was a problem. I was using
zynaddsubfx's DSSI plugin in qtractor -- would this also suffer from
the issues of the jack implementation? Other DSSI plugins I tried did
not produce Xruns, and in fact the Xruns were very much
voice-dependent in zynaddsubfx's DSSI plug. I had thought that with
limited resources, I'd be better off using a DSSI plugin within
qtractor to avoid lots of context switching between processes,
associated cache-misses, and other badness.... I'll try running it
with Yoshimi, given that I've built my own for fedora and I've already
confirmed I can pretty much run or build any Fedora program quite
easily on Meego:

Hi Rui :)
on Suse 11.2 updating from svn failed, so I deleted the directory and co
it completely new.
There were no issues with building and running Qtractor.
When Qtractor was opened, it did ignore my settings for the GUI. The
transport and display should be at the bottom, but they were at the top.
The options are also completely misaligned and btw. time stretching is
activated by default. The mixer window was too small, I guess all old
settings were ignored.
Could you fix that, before I build Qtractor for 64 Studio?
At the moment I can't test Qtractor, I only can build it and have a
brief look.
