I am wondering what the status of the mLAN or something similar is in
linux? I have been able to find some mention of talking with Yamaha
about it, but past that I cant seem to find anything on it. I am
looking for a solution to allow me to connect and stream audio in
realtime over firewire to a Mac Mini to run some VSTs on until VST
support in Linux is worked out completly. Thanks.

I'm working on mLAN support, but my main focus is on streaming audio
to/from hardware devices. It will be a while before what you're looking
for is supported. I don't even know if the OSX mLAN drivers support it
(though, in principle, the Linux PC could pretend to be an mLAN hardware
device...)
mLAN uses IEC 61883-6 for its streaming. You can find 61883-6 drivers
at http://mlanalsa.sourceforge.net/ and http://freebob.sourceforge.net/
but you'll have to do a lot more work to get things going. Neither of
these will do any of the connection management that is required.

Have you tried Netjack for connecting Jack OSX with Jack on Linux?

Is there an implementation of netjack for linux? Heh time to go check, I
had thought it was just on OSX.... That would allow me to use IP over
firewire(I am assuming it is implemented correct?)
However I am glad mLAN support is under works, I would definitly love to be
able to use my Mac Mini as a VST DSP.

looked into NetJack, it is for Linux;) So if the author is reading this I
may be able to give you some feedback soon on if it works crossplatform(x86
Linux to PPC Mac).
However is there a way to get more than a stereo pair going back and forth,
or am I limited in that function for right now?

robert jonssen has a mac and implemented the endianess stuff.
my current work in cvs does not convert everything. i will fix this
soon. but i am focussing on getting the transport sync between the hosts
working.
it is definitely a goal to make it work cross platform.
because i intend to make some jam session with a friend of mine who will
return in january to germany....
in the mean time i need testers who verify cross-platform.
and yes you are currently limited to 2 channels because stupid me
hardcoded the 2 in some places i did not tidy up yet.
but if you use 100mbit 4 channels should be possible without any
drawbacks.
step by step. i dont have much spare time :(

You don't need to get your head checked. The unfortunate truth is that there
are two more or less unrelated netjack projects, one is for MacOS, one is for
Linux.
As Torben points out I did get it to work with PPC Linux (to some degree
atleast) but it won't work with MacOS.
The network-transport mechanism is not the same between the two so it won't
work using macosx-netjack <--> linux-netjack either, atleast not for the
moment.
