This is an very interesting application, and it is released as GPL software.
The only drawback on GNU/Linux is that sound is not working very well,
at least in my experience:

I dunno if there is a way to get better sound out of java applications.
Maybe some devs can help this application with ALSA and/or Jack support?

Yes, this is the home of Impro-Visor.
It is GPL.
There is no Lilypond export to speak of, although it should be
possible. However, I don't believe I can work on it myself, as there
is too much else to do at the moment.
In the next release, we will be redirecting questions to the Yahoo!
impro-visor forum and improvisor(a)cs.hmc.edu will be phased out
(because it attracts too much spam).
I'd be happy to answer any other questions.

out from version 3.39 that is in the user group.
If you host it somewhere else, integration becomes more of a problem.
I realize that the code is not in the best of shape, partly due to the
fact that we have had lots of students working on it. I'd like to get it
in better condition, but time is an issue.

The application runs.
I can see my OSS midi-devices
Now what was the problem again? ... Ah yes, not so very nice sound,
right?
In application, select virmidi as output device. In QjackCtl, connect
virmid to nice jackified synthesizer of choice.
You might have to do (as root) first: modprobe snd-virmidi

The JavaSound developers seem to have mistaken JACK for something like esd.

Dave - I've had this argument with at least one of them online
(somewhere). No, this particular person didn't get it and I suspect
the others won't either. The critical arguments are:
(a) the linux kernel has a general design principle of providing
mechanism not policy
(b) audio mixing is generally best done in floating point format
(because otherwise its dog slow to simulate
fixed point on an x86-style processor) and the kernel cannot
do floating point math
(c) as you allude, JACK is not about providing just shared access
to the audio interface, but routing
between applications as well, which a kernel-based solution
has no role in. this is why JACK
is still so useful on OS X, even though CoreAudio *does*
support mixing multiple app
