I have not yet found a laptop with good misc-in sound quality.
Do any exist?
It is a pain to have to use PCMCIA cards or USB devices.

It is technically possible to get good built-in audio. It is just that
laptop manufactures don't bother.
For example, The Creative Audigy 2 ZS Notebook is a PCMCIA card that has
very good quality audio capture, and that is sitting inside the laptop,
so why can't the laptop itself have good quality mic input?
Note: I will soon be adding Linux ALSA support for the Audigy 2 ZS
Notebook PCMCIA card. Today I managed to get the mic/line-in capture
working, but will be a little time before I have anything I can check
into the ALSA repository.

Because PCMCIA != internal soundcard (even if it is physically inserted into
the laptop's body). Namely, it is enclosed in its own metal casing, not to
mention PCMCIA enclosure both of which allow for a much better R/F shielding
than bunch of exposed chips and connectors on the motherboard.

One other aspect to consider: there is a good reason why the typical
'pro' microphone cable is about 5 times as thick and 25 times heavier
than anything that will fit in a mini-jack. There is just no space on
a laptop or on anything that can be inserted into a laptop for decent
connectors, nor are they mechanically fit to take the strain of even
a few meters of good mic cable.
