hello,
any advice on what would be the best kernel options
when using ingo molnar's patch for an audio setup?
CONFIG_PREEMPT_DESKTOP: Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency Desktop)
or
CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT: Complete Preemption (Real-Time)
CONFIG_PREEMPT_SOFTIRQS: Thread Softirqs
CONFIG_PREEMPT_HARDIRQS: Thread Hardirqs
yes or no?
right now i am building with CONFIG_PREEMPT_DESKTOP,
CONFIG_PREEMPT_SOFTIRQS and CONFIG_PREEMPT_HARDIRQS

AFAIK this one.
Unfortunately, I also try to get decent audio on my 2.6.12
machine but it seems to be tricky.
After enabling the above option and kernel installation, you
need to patch PAM and configure it accordingly or you need to
try set-rtlimits.
Both seems to be a bit complicated for average users. THe
latter one is simpler to install, but the usage seems to be a
bit inconvenient.

Ok. I gave up following the whole discussing on LKML because it was too
fast :-)
If your distro has a 2.6.12 kernel available, you need
to file a bug
report against PAM to support this new kernel feature.
I maintain my own ubuntu-based packages for use inside our group, so
that's no problem. I will make those publicly available once I have them
ready and tested.

AFAIK PREEMPT_DESKTOP was introduced early in the 2.6 series.
If it was enough, we didn't discuss about low latency
anymore, but we do ;-) .
For audio work, a latency of more than zero milliseconds is
still too much.
I really hope to get a latency of about 4msecs. Currently, my
USB card runs at 16msecs and you can feel that. Play a
softsynth percussively...

This is (attached patch files) what I'm currently using for pam on
Planet CCRMA with the latest kernels. You may not want to be that
liberal about who can use what, of course.

I haven't used it yet, but there is a program to give unprivileged
users access to realtime scheduling via the new rlimits, avoiding the
use of pam. You can download it here:
