India a few thousind years ago, so if we google for:

Then we get:

So why don't we all together write software similar to Scala?
What Scala does? How and for what musicians use it?
The topic sounds similar to Arabic Magams. I have listed some
of them from a book, but I'm not exactly sure how they are used.
I have improvised, though.

the GPL. Any changes must be published as source, so noone can "steal"
it.
I guess the big hurdle might be the "no commercial" part. Some people
aren't very fond of the idea of other people selling their software.
It sure would be nice to have Scala in Debian (and other distros)
though. Even if it is written in Ada. :)

Ask him. I've dealt with freeware authors for FGFS. You're more likely to get
approval to fork than to get him to change the license. It could happen, but

Sorry, I wasn't really paying attention, confusing scale and tuning.
Scala appears to do something like this:

You'll find Arabic Lute frettings listed under 'A' in the link above.
There isn't any reference to Arabic Maqamat though (the scales/modes
build on top of the tuning.) That would instead be in maqamworld.com or
some such.

FWIW, I have Scala's source code, provided upon request by Manuel Op de
Coul, Scala's author. I've been unable to build it, I think there's some
old GTK stuff in the code that's not working nicely with GTK 1.2.10 (my
default GTK), and I'm no GTK coder. Perhaps someone here with coding
skills and a lot of extra time could do it ?

./scala: relocation error: ./scala: undefined symbol: gnat__strings_E
So it doesn't appear to be a GTK-related problem. I tried to rebuild
Scala with a version of libgnat compiled with GCC 3.2.2, got no joy. I
was unsuccessful building a new version of libgnat, it seems quite
compiler-dependent. I'm open to suggestions...
