I have downloaded the C++ sample code from the echo
site. Has anybody
developed it beyond that point? I will go ahead and set up a web site for
the management of the development. Are there any suggestions as to the tools
we will need to collaborate?
Well, base would be CVS and bugzilla. A forum system would be good, as it's
more flexible than a mailing list. phpBB is quite easy to setup, or are you
thinking one of the standard repositories?
I don't have much experience of more advanced tools under Linux; what do you
guys reckon?
It'd be good if we could version control diagrams as well.
My 2 cents ;)

to 60% functionality. once it reaches that point, ALSA will happily
take it on, and you get CVS and the ALSA mailing lists to use.

non-issue. Ive been coding 23 years on Unix - is that enough experience? -
been with Linux since 1995 and developed many device drivers for propietery
video equipment. I just need some more detailed chip specs and a little
time -

Older and newer isn't an issue at all it seems, as they're virtually
identical from the driver POV. All cards are 24 bit internally, and
the DMA subsystem seems to scale to 100 kHz without too weird hacks.
We can support any model, so let's just start with the ones we have
(Layla20, Darla20, Gina20, Darla24), and maybe throw the firmware for
the others in later, so others can test directly. (Might actually
work! ;-)

There is no detailed chip spec, but OTOH, drivers talk mostly to the
firmware it seems. There is some documentation in the C++ driver
archive, but it's mostly higher level stuff, dealing with the API of
the C++ driver rather than talking directly to the cards. The idea is
that you should plug your platform specific stuff into their C++
driver and use that, rather than implement a new driver.
So, the "documentation" we have is the driver code, which is the very
code that runs these cards on the currently supported platforms.
Maybe not optimal, but at least it's the *real* code, and not some
incomplete and half broken "Linux port".

Yeah, I have to agree. Using separate CVS and stuff is overkill. We
can just mail patches if we hack on more than one front before going
into the ALSA tree, and put a "current version" archive somewhere.
BTW, I think the C++ driver actually is a lot more than 5000 lines of
code - but it looks like it's because of lots and lots of
copy/pasting. I think we can get something cleaner and more compact
if we just take a look at the feature set of the full range of cards
before hacking away. Implement the features, and then enable the ones
available on each model. The models are *very* similar on the driver
side.
