hi everyone!
here's a question for sysadmin type low-latency adepts:
i have a general-purpose notebook that doubles as a lean and mean
recording machine. it's opensuse, which means it works nicely with most
bells and whistles, but it also has an awful lot of questionable stuff
running that interferes with stable low-latency performance.
so i usually boot into a ll kernel and kill everything i don't need for
the duration of a session.
to ease that job, i have put the (unused) runlevel 4 back to work:
basically i copied rc5.d into rc4.d and ruthlessly deleted everything i
don't want. now "sudo telinit 4" will slim down my process list.
since the runlevel corresponds with the need for a ll kernel, i wonder:
is there any way to tell the kernel (via grub) to tell init to ignore
the initdefault in /etc/inittab and go directly to runlevel $FOO?
and while we're there, doing a kexec instead of a warm reboot would be
so sexy - has anyone played with that yet?

just append a 4 to the grub's boot entry, no?

Yep, append the runlevel number.
Yep, it's faster. But it's a little troublesome and I was always wary,
because I had to adapt my system's shutdown script to tag along with
kexec.

simply add that number to the command line of grub.

Run ntpdate when the interface connects and don't use ntpd...

That is one thing to think about. Wireless tends to not disturb you in the
studio because it has a nice going connection. On location it will screw you
because it regularly checks for known networks. And if you have a wireless
sharing the interrupt with the firewire-controller (like I have), you are
doomed unless you disable wireless...

cups,
rpcbind,
nfs,
smb,
sshd.
These all do nothing when no network is present. And even then they aren't
resource-hungry nor blocking higher priorities. But an enabled sshd helps when
some strange things lock up your graphics while doing audio:-)
bluetoothd,
Only does something when there is a bluetooth adaptor...
in order of what i believe to be importance - cron
will generate regular
cpu spikes when dealing with cronjobs, ntp time gaps can confuse ffado,
networkmanager can also misbehave. the rest i haven't had particular
problems with, but i thought why keep them around...
If you are that much into optimization, you should go text-mode only. X and
the kernel-drivers are far more influential on the performance then what you
disabled in the networking-category...
