Hi LADs,
It great to notice that the list of Non-Session-Manager (NSM) support is
growing, thanks!
Ardour 3, Carla, Qtractor Zita-rev1, Laborejo, Qmidiarp are examples of
apps which just got NSM support. AMS and Qmidiroute are WIP. (For a more
extended list, see below).
The nice thing about Carla, is that you can use LV2 plugins (and dssi,
sfz, gig, sf2, vst) as standalone jack apps in NSM now. So yes, LV2
plugins are also useful for working with a more modular approach.
Of course it would be nice if more developers start to support NSM in
their apps, most notable the nicest 'Jack standalone' apps imho:
- Rakarrack
- PHASEX
- Ingen
- Guitarix
- Giada and/or Kluppe (?) (JackTransport would be nice too)
- HarmonySEQ
- Muse
- Hydrogen
- ...
- ...
I'm sure I forgot quite a few...

From the above projects, Rakarrack doesn't seems to be actively
developed. So if an dev outside the project wants to add nsm support,
you're welcome. (That's true for all Linuxaudio software I guess :) )
I'm not sure whether there're (technically/workflow) reasons to add nsm
support if there's already an plugin (LV2/DSSI) version of it. Assuming
the plugin version has no limitations compared to the standalone
version, you can use the plugin version in plugin hosts with nsm support
(Carla atm). If you think it would make a difference, I'd be interested
for your argumentation.

Yes, Yoshimi for instance ;) I'll take another look at

again about jack-session vs NSM. The aforementioned patch namely removes
all jack-session support and I'm not sure if I want that.

jack-session is specified by jack itself and supported by other
session managers (e.g. ladish), so indeed, please don't drop
jack-session.
OTOH it's good to have NSM as an addition.

To my knowledge (from direct IRC interaction with e.g. torben hohn) there is very little
interest by the original jack-session devs to continue, support and fix it.
The moment I heard that I decided for me that the only viable option for session
management is NSM.

however, i'm happy to switch to whatever other manager if that one covers
the jacksession functionality

I have no idea who controls the various web-sites that still promote
things like LASH (e.g. on nongnu), but I do know that Jack devs use
doxygen and should add deprecation warnings to the jack-session pages.

jack-session is NOT deprecated.
conversations with the one known in this thread as rosea.grammostola
indicated that not much more work is likely on jack-session at any time in
the near future, but given that almost all development work that changes
the JACK API has been absent for a couple of years, this is hardly a
surprise.

I don't think Jack-Session is used much these days, tell me if I'm
wrong. If they still exist, I would challenge the JS users to try NSM,
good chance you'll prefer the latter.
If JS is used, it's used within Ladish I think. Remember that Ladish
will support nsm in the future.
However, I don't think JS needs to be removed to add nsm support.
There're more apps which supports both (e.g. added JS first and then
switched to NSM without removing JS). Removal of JS might be better for
tactical reasons though. You can argue that it's better for the LAU/LAD
community if there's one session API to support.

I only removed Jack Session in that patch out of convenience and having
been in the habit of removing LASH support from things. It should be fairly
easy for whoever applies the patch to avoid removing JS. I'm not likely to
do it though, as I no longer have a use for yoshimi.
