Greetings all,
I guess title says it all. I do have working examples (i.e. the sequencer
example from the LAD 2004) that make new instances of synths but none of them
actually do real-time updates to existing instances.
At any rate I would greatly appreciate your help in this matter.
This is as far as I got and cannot figure it out beyond this point (my brain
is pretty darn fried :-):

What I am simply trying to do is to affect the frequency of the sinetone by
moving the slider, yet nothing changes when I move the slider.

You are tripping over a common Client-Server-Architecture misunderstanding
here. The code inside a SynthDef is only executed *once* at
the client side to construct the Synth graph. You
can *not* set variables insides a SynthDef from client side GUI objects directly.
What you actually want is:
* A synthDef with arguments which represent the values you want to change.
* A client side GUI with callbacks that *set* the server-side
Synth arguments on update.
I will try to illustrate, but I dont use SCUM, so its untested,
but I am pretty sure you'll get the idea:

AFAICS (don't have SC here in the office) this should work.
In this example Mario uses n.set() where n is the client
side representation of the server node that holds the SynthDef.
There is also a more general mechanism to send OSC commands to
the server - IIRC it's s.sendMesg() or some such. You can use
this to set parameters on a single node or on an entire group.
Yet another way is to write the synths so they use control
busses instead of parameters, and then send messages to set
the control bus values. This can be used even for 'anonynmous'
synths that are created, do their thing and disappear, i.e.
for grains.

you're mixing up the server and language contexts. when you
write a synthdef, the code is not executed on the server but
merely used to build a graph of unit generators and compile
it into a binary representation. by assigning `freq' in the
view's action, you set the value at the time the synthdef is
built.
you'll have to split up the code:

Actually there is another, very odd reason why my example did not work. Even
if I used your working example, I found out the following odd behavior:
If I have a statement that does:
Out.ar(out, SinOsc.ar(freq, mul: 0.5))
Then it works.
If I have a statement that does:
Out.ar(out, SinOsc.ar(freq * 100, mul: 0.5))
This also works.
Now if I have:
Out.ar(out, SinOsc.ar(freq + 100, mul: 0.5))
This doesn't.
Naturally, one could always put something before this statement to fix this,
i.e.:
freq = freq + 100;
Out.ar(out, SinOsc.ar(freq, mul: 0.5))
But it is still interesting why the multiplication works and addition
doesn't.
Also, I noticed that on one of your SCUM example screenshots you are using
.connect method to connect something, yet I was unable to locate anything of
value in the documentation. I assume that this could be something similar to
the signal-slot idea in Qt and/or other Widget languages (but obviously I
may be completely off the mark), so I was wondering if you could please
provide an example for that? I would really appreciate it!
Finally, while I am on the roll with questions :-), do you mind also
mentioning what's the current status/roadmap of SCUM in terms of supporting
all stock Supercollider widgets, as I noticed that the SCUM widgets use
non-standard names and in addition I am not sure whether all widgets are as
of yet supported, all of which, at least in my experience, makes a number of
sc examples available on the net difficult if not impossible to run in
Linux. Please don't get me wrong, this is not to criticize as I am eternally
grateful for SCUM, I am simply curious as to what is the roadmap for the
project.

I see no reason why the last one should not work...
There is something related you have to watch out for (and I've
fallen into this trap at leass 10000 (binary) times): SC does
_not_ use the normal precedence of operators. If you write
a + b * c
that will be interpreted as
(a + b) * c
So always use () to be sure.

works fine here. what value does freq have? what errors do
you get?

SCUM did have a signal/slot mechanism, but it turned out to
be overkill.

in the upcoming release SCUM will evolve from an attempt to
provide the 'standard' SC view classes on linux to a
standalone, cross-platform server application. i agree it
was a questionable move to strive for compatibility with the
existing SC view classes in some areas, while doing things
differently in others. SCUM's heading towards total
incompatibility, so be patient :)

there's no roadmap. work on SCUM is demand-driven, i.e. i
implement things if and when i need them, and most of the
time i don't need a gui. contributions (new view classes,
documentation) are welcome, though ...
