The Linux kernel is a GPL'ed application yet Nvidia

Quite different. Anyone can distribute the kernel
without caring about the existence of the nVidia
drivers. But if an application includes the VSTSDK, it
presumably isn't complete without it.
Maybe the application just has hooks for the VST SDK, and a network
installer downloads and compiles it on the users machine? I guess
Steinberg might consider this a form of distribution.
given that even human downloading requires email requests for help to be
sent to the vst-plugins list, it seems unlikely that a network installer
is going to be feasible. steinberg's ability to maintain a viable,
consistent download point is laughable.
