Ok I apologize if this should go on the user list, wasnt really sure..
I am considering purchasing a PDA that will eventually have the express
purpose of recording 24/96 audio, and I was looking at picking up an
apogee Mini-me USB. I was wondering how uniform USB audio interfaces
were, and the likelihood the Apogee would actually work or not as it is
not listed at all in the Alsa wiki.

If the device is "class compliant" it will work. If not all bets are
off.

Take a good look at the specs. I bought a M-Audio Audiophile USB and
found out that it was not "class compliant" and then on top of that it
was unable to do full-duplex audio at 24/96. I ended up buying a PCI
card.
The general feedback I got from others was that 24/96 audio on a USB
device can be somewhat tricky.

Actually, you don't even have look at the specs. M-audio uses really
sneaky tactics with their USB devices.
Look at the pictures of the Audiophile USB. See anything missing? Where
is the USB logo? They only use the "USB trident" which is used only to
identify the connector. They don't use the proper USB logo for which
they need to be class complient. If they would use the logo and fail
compliency, they would be subject to a flogging from USB-IF.
So in effect, their USB devices aren't USB devices at all. They just
happen to work with some USB hosts.
I got hit by this via their Quattro. Nice piece of kit, too bad it...
didn't work properly!

I've never used a USB audio device and don't plan to, but would expect
this to be included in the specs posted on the web site...
Also it's possible for a device to be USB compliant but not a "class
compliant audio device".
It used to be the easiest way to tell was "does it work on OSX without a
driver", I'm not sure if that's still the case.

Thanks for the info, will check on wether or not it is class compliant,
was exactly what I needed to know.
In as far as the M-Audio thing goes, I have had some nasty run ins with
them recently(Exact things like this)unfortunatly and am trying to steer
clear for a bit from them, part of the reason I decided to spend the
extra money for an RME interface;)

Good choice. :)

of the question for linux users.
You might have heard about freebob, which is a alpha-stage driver for
some firewire devices. it doesn't work with the fireface. (and isn't
there yet for serious work for any device anyway).

Yes I was aware of this, but it never hurts to get a reminder. It looks
like once my rep gets back in at sweetwater I will probably be ordering
the RME Hammerfall 9632(The 24/192 Interface with Analog In/Outs and
192kHz optional expansion boards... Insert Drool here) as it is a nice
balance for my budget at the moment. I was thinking about the 96/52 as
I like ADAT as a medium, I just dont have the money for some AD/DA
converters to do it justice though and replace my Pres. I think the
96/32 will serve me good as that one IS listed in Alsa, Thanks Paul is
it who wrote the drivers for that one?;)
Yea at the moment I ahve one of the earlier interfaces that could do
24/96 and am having problems, in particular at the upper end of the
sample rates, but even in general(See my post Sorting Out XRuns in
Audio-User) that I think are more to do with the card showing its age
and possible consumerness;)
What I mentioned above though was for a possible portable setup, I have
a Marantz but I am not happy with the Pres on it, and was considering
picking up a decent QTopia based PDA, putting ALSA on it, and using the
USB connection for the Apogee to give me a nice portable 24/96 setup
with good pres. Still considering it, but I havent found anything that
says USB standards compliant on the Apogee docs, even though from
looking at their installation docs I woudl bet it is, I am not spending
that 1.2k before I know for sure;) Besides that would be a ways off.
