Hey guys,
I'm looking for the "lowest-common-denominator" of audio file formats that
handle BPM info.
Do programs like Ardour / Audacity / Mixxx write BPM info when exporting /
analysing a file?

ardour doesn't do any bpm analysis, so no. it does do transient + note
onset analysis, and stores that information (derived from using a vamp
plugin).

mp3, wav, vorbis, mp4, mkv files can have BPM metadata (according to my grep in
the gstreamer source code). GStreamer has a bpm detector as well.
