Greetings:
As many of you already know, SuSE has entered into an interesting 5-year
plan with Microsoft. You can find the details on Slashdot and
elsewheres, so I won't rehash them here.
What isn't mentioned is the ALSA/SuSE connection. I'm pretty sure some
of the ALSA developers read these lists, and I'd like to hear from them
regarding the significance of their employer's new connections and
ALSA's IP and its continued development. Is this marriage happy news for
Linux sound or is it an unholy alliance signifying doom and destruction
for the world at large (and not just the Linux audio community ;) ?
Or will things just cruise along in business-as-usual mode ?
Any and all insight vastly appreciated.

Well, their stated aim is to make Linux and MS work together so as they
are about to start on the Zune marketing drive that could mean we will
see some action otherwise there's probably nothing else that isn't
already done or being done that M$ will want to add to Linux Audio.
Oh, apart from native VST support but I can't really see that being a
priority for Redmond.
They might pay Stephane Letz some money to port JACK though ;-)

JACK though ;-)
Stephane has already ported JACK to windows.

Let's put this whole thing as a mental graph.
SUSE has brought us ALSA and KDE support.
Novell bought SUSE.
MS accepts a (bilateral?) deal from Novell to make (old on new) Novell's
customers happier, at least on the midterm (5 years).
OTOH there's insiders among us that can speak for themselves.
Now comes my personal thought:
I will still do prefer openSUSE as my Linux distro of choice, and will
do pass the message. But, ...be warned. At the slightest hint that ALSA
and KDE is getting behind the community idea, I will step ahead (i.e flee :)
But again, mind you, I have no problem in doing it all in the LFS way :D

Well, my understanding is that the agreement doesn't change any
situation. Novell argues that the whole packages _are_ patent-free
and _will be_ in future, too.
It means that we have no support for patent-protected WMV playback on
Linux natively, and won't have a support in future, too, unless
Microsoft explicitly licenses it.
The agreement is not about allowing the patent for use. It's a kind
of cold-war agreement, an assurace for world piece -- in theory :)
The strange part is some exclusion meintioned in the agreement, and
that confuses and angers people. I'm not sure how this deal
influences in practice. But, the original idea isn't so spiteful as
rumored everywhere... I hope.
About the development in future: At least, I don't see any
significant changes in the development inside Novell/SUSE. So is ALSA
development, too. It's going on as it is now. We just need to keep
our eyes more cafefully on the move of MS...

Just a belated "Thanks!" to all who responded. Subsequent news reported
on /. and elsewhere seems to indicate that the partnership is perhaps
not so well-defined as its participants originally thought.
