I am a musician and also a programmer. I have many years experience of
coding but not in the audio field. Any tuts around? How do I get into
it?

Lea,
I suggest you use the Jack API when working with audio:
http://jackit.sf.net
Those with more experience can advise you further. What are you wanting to implement?

Basic idea is to save yourself time by not re-inventing the wheel.
Someone has already mention Jack for application interconnectivity and I
will sugest libsndfile

for reading and writing WAV, AIIF, AU and similar audio file.

It depeneds what you want to write. As long as you use the things that
have allready been suggested there is little thats specific to audio.

A good start might be writing plugins, i.e. short audio effect or
synthesis snippets, that can be used in other software. The standard
plugin format on Linux is LADSPA (www.ladspa.org), but you could also
write modules directly for applications like SpiralSynthModular or for
Pure Data (Pd).
www.musicdsp.org should give you some ideas on code, that could be
used in plugins.

You can start by helping me finish the linux-port of my Radium music
editor, http://www.notam02.no/radium, which is the worlds best
music-editor.
By adding jack and midi-support, you should get a good start on
audio-programming. :)
