Hi!
My son is playing around with my little SDL based drum machine, DT-42
again. He seems to be having fun, but I suppose he'd be better off
with something more straight-forward (DT-42 is more like a MOD
tracker than a conventional drum machine), and something with more
obvious ways of creating melodies... At least, that's what I'd
like! :-D
This brings up some thoughts I've been having for years now: A really
simple, yet somewhat useful and educational music toy. An integrated
synth/sampler/sequencer, possibly with audio recording facilities
down the road... Sort of like a tracker (Amiga MOD style), but with a
more visual GUI. Probably some sort of piano roll. A bunch of nice
sounds (I'm thinking IFFT synthesis) with some pre-wired intuitive
timre controls. Maybe a library of drum patterns... Preferably SDL
based and portable to all sorts of computers and devices.
In short: Tux Paint for music! :-)
Is there something like this already out there?
Any interest in this sort of stuff?
Ideas?
I'll probably use EEL for all high level code, over a C engine. EEL is
probably not the most sensible choice for a Free/Open Source project,
but I'm using EEL for various stuff myself (mostly work related), and
it could use some more pilot projects to guide future development.

Hi,
I think you need to install Sugar to run it. There are Sugar packages
for Debian and Fedora (among others).
Once you have Sugar installed, instead of getting the source you can
grab the package from activities.sugarlabs.org and run the program
from the journal.

Sugar/ XO is in my 64 Studio 3.0 / Ubuntu Hardy repositories. Hm, I
guess I read something about TamTam isn't fine with XO? I might be
wrong. I must be wrong, XO seems to be a platform for a project called
One Laptop Per Child. Anyhow, I just watched the list and found TamTam
interesting, but at the moment I have something more important to do.
I hope this is a help for David, who ask for it, maybe he can report if
it's fine and write a little howto ;).

FYI, my 2.5 year old has had an XO since Xmas and he enjoys using tamtam
to make sounds. The sugar interface is intuitive for him and even though
he has thrown the device around several times it is still perfectly
functional and doesn't have a scratch or blemish on it.
I can highly recommend getting an XO as a gift for any child. When you
buy one you also donate a second unit to a child who is not fortunate
enough to have the resources to purchase one on their own.

a package for any Linux distro and I couldn't found a valid link to
a source code. If you know what I might have overseen in passing, a
valid link to the source code or a package for any Linux distro,
please post a link.
I'm on Gentoo, but the Sugar overlay is masked on x86_64 (which I'm
using). I'll see if I can try it some other way...

as the primary input device. I understand it is a somewhat popular
interface for kids these days.
I'll probably use EEL for all high level code,
over a C engine. EEL is

it could use some more pilot projects to guide future development.
I'm not familiar with EEL. Maybe use fluidsynth so you can have
soundfont support? A whole world of cheesy keyboard sounds at your
fingertips.

Could do that too, but I'd like to focus on IFFT synthesis (massively
additive synthesis implemented over IFFT, more specifically) as
the "standard" sound device. More tweakable, more fun, and extremely
compact instrument definitions. :-)

Using SDL sound only (not SDL graphics) but you may want to try LMMS:
http://lmms.sourceforge.net/
It is a Fruity Loops clone, very easy to use, nice Qt GUI, pattern based,
piano roll, integrated FM and wavetable synths (can use external ones),
included library for drums and other instrument samples, can work standalone
but it is interoperable with other applications and external hardware (SDL,
Jack, OSS and ALSA drivers...), multiplatform...

Then you'd be surprised to know that my 4-year-old brother loves to scrape
across the LMMS virtual keyboard - with a touchpad at that. He also knows
that dragging a different item from the left side gives him a different
sound. Once he's bored enough I'm taking him on to the next step - placing
the notes in the piano roll and pressing "play".
