Hi :)
my PCI MIDI devices passed the alsa-midi-latency-test always with < 1.01
ms, on several Linux, with several kernels and graphic drivers. It's
audible that this can't be true. I was sceptic, when my USB MIDI passed
with around 2 ms, because recordings did show that there is much more
latency for the USB MIDI, when using Linux, just Windows is able to do
such less jitter on my machine, see the archives. I won't install
Windows again to compare the PCI MIDI. This computer can do better, but
MIDI fails for Linux. This comparison is just for testing the abilities
of the hardware.
Please test yourself what I did today and you'll be able to here it too.
It isn't just audible for gifted musicians, you'll really here that the
FluidSynth DSSI Kick and the Kick played by an external MIDI drum module
will be played one after another, but in unison. Note that I tested,
that this drum module still is 100% ok.
Please read the test and do the same as I did.
I decided to do the audio MIDI jitter test with 64 Studio 3.3 alpha. I
kept the proprietary 'nvidia' driver, even if the 'nv' driver, used by
64 Studio 3.0 beta, seems to cause x*10 µm less jitter.
First I checked the package 'rt-irq'. It's version 20090810-0ubuntu1
(karmic) and regarding to diff, I didn't over installed the current
version before. On Rui's download page http://www.rncbc.org/jack/ the
current version is 20090920.
I installed a dummy package rtirq-init_20090920_all.deb and updated both
rtirq files.
For /etc/default/rtirq I edited
line 30 from

I fixed the MIDI adaptor cable by screws to the 16:0 device and used the
audio IOs of the same card. It's the card with IRQ 20. Envy24 Control
automatically chose this card.
After shutdown and startup I did perform the ALSA MIDI latency test.

timeout: there seems to be no connection between ports 16:0 and 16:0
I didn't check any connections, but run the test again. I've got no idea
what's wrong, when I get those timeouts. The adaptor cable with
opto-coupler is a brand new non self made one and the timeout can happen
for both cards, my old card S/N 00xxxxx with an Envy24 chip not by
Terratec and the new second hand card from Ebay S/N 04xxxxx with an
Envy24 chip by Terratec.
I didn't compare all the other chips, but the board's layouts don't
differ.
When doing the audio MIDI test the MIDInterface did work without missing
data.

A Yamaha DX7 was directly connected to hw MIDI in and an Alesis D4 was
directly connected to hw MIDI out. The analog audio IOs from the sound
card and the main outs from the Alesis D4 were connected to a Behringer
UB2442FX-Pro. So, valid home recording equipment, without any critical
stuff. Excepted to the limit for the sound quality, there shouldn't be
any issues caused by this setup.
For the MIDI audio test's LXDE session I'm running GNOME terminal tab 1
JACK2, tab 2 Qtractor. Evolution offline + this Email opened for writing
to the lists. Envy24 Control and nothing else.
For Qtractor I switched from queue timer (resolution) 'system timer
(1000 Hz)' to 'HR timer (1000000000 Hz)' and restarted Qtractor.
1.
I disconnected all audio connections for JACK and connected hw MIDI in
to hw MIDI out. Live I played forefinger left hand kick, thumb left hand
snare and forefinger right hand ride.
To get an impression for the latency I connected the DX7 MIDI out
directly to the D4 MIDI in and then I reconnected to the PCI card.
The difference is alarming :(.
Yamaha DX7 --> Alesis D4 results in a 100% musical groove.
Yamaha DX7 --> PC --> Alesis D4 results in extreme latency, it's hardly
possible to keep on grooving. This never ever is a latency of just 1 ms,
I'm sure the ALSA MIDI latency test is mistaken. Even a MIDI thru chain
by several MIDI devices won't cause such bad latency.
2.
I disconnected all ALSA MIDI connections. I disconnected the DX7 from
the hw interface.
Qtractor was connected to hw MIDI out, while hw MIDI out still was
connected to the D4.
3.
After adding a MIDI track I added a MIDI clip (from bar 2 to bar 4, 4/4,
120BPM) with those notes:

Loop play for hw MIDI by Qtractor is a disaster, hence I copied and
paste repeated it 39 times, pasted with the grid set to beat. The
'rhythm' then was from bar 2 to bar 82.

After adding a second MIDI track, I copied all clips from the first to
the new track.
The second track isn't for hw MIDI, but FluidSynth DSSI.
I connected Qtractor audio out to system playback.
Before I could play with the hw MIDI track muted, Qtractor crashed.
I opened a third tab for the GNOME terminal and tried to kill Qtractor
without success.

Qtractor audio out was connected to system playback and system capture
was auto-connected to Qtractor audio in. I now disabled auto connect,
but kept this audio connections, resp. I had to manually restore them,
perhaps disabling auto connect, did disconnect them.
I had to disconnect and manually restore Qtractor MIDI out, because it
didn't connect to the 16:0 EWX 24/96 as stored, but to the 20:0 EWX
24/96.
5.
I launched Envy24 Control.
6.
I pushed play for Qtractor transport.
I stopped it.
Set up gain for FluidSynth from the default -14 dB to 0 dB.
Played again.
Unmuted the hw MIDI track.
The notes played by the soundfont and by the D4 are fluctuating between
completely being out of sync and between being played unison.
I stopped playing.
RESULT
THE PCI MIDI INTERFACE WITH AN ALSA-MIDI-TEST-LATENCY RESULT OF < 1.1 ms
IS COMPLETELY USELESS TO MAKE MUSIC, BUT 'GREAT'.
AND IT'S AUDIBLE THAT THERE IS MUCH MORE JITTER BUT 1.1 ms.
Any hints how to solve this are welcome.
What information is needed?

Did you try to start jackd with -p64 instead of -p1024
using JACK-midi, I've encountered a similar issue with fluidsynth always
synchronizing note-start/ends to jack cycles.
Simply lowering the frames-per-period got me playing again so I did not
check if it's related to JACK-midi or FluidSynth 1.1.1 in general.

Did you try to start jackd with -p64 instead of -p1024 I was hinting that the audible midi-jitter could be a
result of
midi-messages getting 'quantizied' to jack-periods.

time ago. But we are talking about ALSA MIDI to the hardware

C64 and Atari ST are stable, but there are some issues for e.g the

1) ALSA / hardware jitter
2) qtractor/fluidsynth timing/sync

expected, all other tests that mix external-hardware and software will

Did you try to start jackd with -p64 instead of -p1024
A good argument, because when I made tests in the past for the USB MIDI,
things become better at >= -p256 (when I had this Windows test install
latency for the EWX 24/96 audio was less high than for Linux). The
problem here is, that I need at least -p512 and even than I'm not safe
regarding to issues for JACK audio, that's why I used -p1024 instead of
-p512. For a test -p64 should work, but when recording music I would
need to increase it step by step until a minimum of -p512. I was hinting that the audible midi-jitter could
be a result of
midi-messages getting 'quantizied' to jack-periods.
It seems to be like that. Take a look at my email with the

On a todo list, but there seems to be a correlation to JACK audio. using
JACK-midi, I've encountered a similar issue with fluidsynth always
synchronizing note-start/ends to jack cycles.
Simply lowering the frames-per-period got me playing again so I did not
check if it's related to JACK-midi or FluidSynth 1.1.1 in general.
At least FluidSynth DSSI (host is Qtractor) is able to play in unison
with any DSSI or virtual ALSA MIDI and JACK MIDI (-Xseq) synth on my
machine. Just 'in unison' for virtual synth to hw synth there sometimes
is more delay, but just an early reflection like effect.
Note! It was hard to groove when I connected the master keyboard to ALSA
hw MIDI in --> DIRECTLY TO --> ALSA hw MIDI out and this to a 100% ok
drum module. Directly connecting the master keyboard to the drum module
there were no issues. 2) Do you have
a Hardware MIDI Sequencer? Have it play a simple
metronome beat and dump incoming MIDI-messages. See if the timestamps of
each midi-note-on message are identically spaced.
C64 and Atari ST are stable, but there are some issues for e.g the

ALSA MIDI thru definitive has audible latency. I played live testing
this. I can't say if it was stable latency or jitter.
Do you know the psychological effect, when you try to sing, while you
just can here your vocals with much delay?
You will lose timing.
amidiplay can play MIDI files for two MIDI channels? Note! It's not easy
to notice this jitter, when there isn't a reference, e.g. you try to
groove live or a bass by a software synth should be in sync with
external drums. Just listening to one source with jitter just works for
a short time, than you become unable for hours to notice a bad timing.
But you always will notice this issues for real work, e.g. when first
recording an external bass and than recording the external bass drum
etc..

There might be another strange behaviour. IIRC when I recorded audio
from external MIDI devices (when I used my USB MIDI in the past), some
waveforms were recorded, before the MIDI event should be played.
I need to test this again.
Btw. I used Qtractor, that didn't had a latency compensation that might
work bad, hence all MIDI events should have (positive) delay, but
negative delay for recordings. When doing the test today I even didn't
notice if always the virtual or the external drum sounds were later or
if it does change, far less that I was able to hear if there was just
delay or negative delay, I didn't record anything and it's hard to hear
those details, it's easier to hear that something isn't in timeing.

a MIDI wind controller at different latencies (I'm a saxophone player) - I'm
not sure if I could *hear* it, but I could sure *feel* the difference.

It might be interesting if you could make similar recordings - see what kind
of latency gets unacceptable, if the latency is mostly constant or very

I did something similar for my USB MIDI interface. I recorded short
sinus audio impulses and watched the waveforms by completely zooming in
using Audacity, but there's still the ambient noise level that makes it
impossible to see the absolut beginning of a signal. Jitter was around
+- 4 ms as far as I was able to interpret the waveforms. A short and
loud sinus impulse is the best signal I could produce to see a
difference to the ambient nose level. I didn't do this test for the PCI
MIDI.

That's right, it will become an issue when you will record HiHat, Snare,
Kick, Bass etc., the rhythm group one after the other or if you wish to
double a kick by two sounds etc..

easily. Not if all instruments do have the same jitter, but if just one

and check if listeners are able to identify which is which,
or at least to put them into order.
What you have been doing so far is compare an 'exact' version
with one that has some unkown and uncontrolled errors. You could
'prove' anything you want in that way.
You are just jumping to conclusions and making gratituous
generalisations.

No doubt about it, I'm speculating.
Earlier I send somebody an email off-list (see below), anyway, even when
playing live by using ALSA MIDI just thru, there is latency, with or
without jitter, but off course without negative delay ;).
My speculations might be wrong. But there are audible issues and I'm
sure that even non-musicians are able to hear it, unfortunately I'm some
kind of freak, all the people I could ask to listen to this issues are
highly gifted musicians, unfortunately the averaged German soccer, radio
prime time, heavy rotation, music listening audience is beyond the
people that I know.
Anyway. this crowd shouldn't be the benchmark for good music. Am I
wrong?
I don't no what's bad, but something is absolutely bad for hw MIDI.

they were not accustomed to my song, but they need a bad mastering to be
fine with this song.
A blind study is useless regarding to musical issues. Or do you think we should start mixing music optimised
to loudness,
because tests show that the audience prefers music without dynamic?
Taste-minorities. You play your dynamic-rich songs to fans of classical music
and see their reactions. If you can distinguish the "like it because of
dynamics" from the "don't like it because of rock-vs-classical". Which

It's impossible to do neutral measurements and from a democratically
worldview listening to recordings without dynamic is the winner.
Today I listened to a very good free jazz recording, but even this
marginal group tends to do masterings that are borderline.
And I'm sure, my neighbours aren't able to understand this kind of
music, I bet they were near top call the psychiatric ambulance when I
listende to this free jazz, while they blow the vuvuzela the whole day.
IMO Peter Brötzmann (on Sax) and a friend of mine on the Piano is much
more pleasant, but any vuvuzela players, anyway the averaged opinion is
different to my opinion.
In other words, there's no neutral test regarding to musical issues.

No doubt about your argument regarding to esoteric audio cables, but
timing issues are something that aren't measurable.
A friend has got Huntington's disease, he does very good compositions,
but he isn't able to play those rock songs. His timing is bad, for me
and I'm sure for you too, but for him there are no timing issues.
There is no objective valid timing fluctuation. The musical savant next
door might be much more sensitive than I'm, regarding to the groove, I
don't know ... I guess there doesn't live a musical savant next door,
perhaps I'm this savant ;).
Anyway, forget about my assumptions about ms of jitter. I'm fine with
the C64, Atari ST and all those stand alone sequencers from the 80ies. I
tested did it, but I'm sure I'll be able to hear hear the difference to
my Linux computer ... not when listening to all MIDI instruments played
alone at the same time, but when listening to MIDI instruments + audio
tracks.
I don't care about my neighbours who might be unable to notice a bad
timing, resp. broken groove.
I try to get a home studio equipment, just for my pleasure.
It's not neutral science, it has to fit to my needs.

keyboard, played by an organist. I don't know, I never tested it, but

Absoulutely not. Organ pipes take some time before they will sound,
this can easily be 20 ms and considerably more for some. Apart from
that pipes are not all at the same distance from the player, this
again can easily introduce variations of 20 ms or more, even between
pipes of the same rank.

Aeolus doesn't care or even know where the MIDI is coming from.

(no PC involved), causes a huge latency (20-26ms) making it utterly unusable

repeating this, but so far I haven't seen a shred
of verifyable evidence to support this claim.
I could record audio for kick, snare, hi hat and bass one after the
other and mix it to one rhythm group and additionally I could record all
instruments at the same time and send the recordings to you and you
could do the same by yourself. It's also hard to say, if there isn't
more jitter, but 4 ms. At what point starts the attack of a signal
within the ambient noise level? At least I could record FluidSynth DSSI in unison
played to the Alesis
D4 by using different -p values. I'm sure everybody would be able to
here the problem.
Let's keep this thread restricted to the situation with only ALSA MIDI in
routed directly to ALSA MIDI OUT - it's getting hard to keep track of what's
going on :).

The USB MIDI was much better on Windows, even better than the PCI cards at the moment are
on Linux. So I guess, yes I don't know, that the hardware is ok.

'golden ears' even without JACK, right? Let's first try to get this reliable

If nobody should demand to it, I won't use

'timestamp'-test as somebody recommended?
The Atari e.g. could play 4 on the floor at 120 BPM. I could watch the
received events by a Linux MIDI monitor or record it by a Linux MIDI
sequencer. But, should I sync by MTC or anything else etc.?

for my needs. So, how should I use the Atari ST to make a
'timestamp'-test as somebody recommended?

I guess openoctave supports an ALSA MIDI sequencer only, based on
Rosegarden, but without audio, hence jackd isn't needed?
Perhaps seq24 and other only need ALSA MIDI, but JACK audio ... but make
use of those isn't easy and perhaps they don't know MIDI sync
possibilities?
OTOH MIDI sync by e.g. MTC might not be useful for this test?

This parameter will not have any effect on anything because there is no
program that uses the HPET timers from userspace. When high-resolution
timers are used by ALSA, this is done inside the kernel where there is
no limit on the maximum frequency.

program that uses the HPET timers from userspace. When high-resolution
timers are used by ALSA, this is done inside the kernel where there is
no limit on the maximum frequency.

tests.
There are a couple of audio-tools who can use either RTC or HPET for
timing, although most of them need an option to explicitly enable it.

cat /proc/sys/dev/hpet/max-user-freq
are they Hz?
linux-2.6/Documentation/hpet.txt does not mention it at all and
linux-2.6/Documentation/rtc.txt hints it's Hz but does not explicitly
say so.

Okay, what ever user-space might be, I assume regarding to the
explanations it's unimportant for rt. And as mentioned by the text of
the link, I can confirm that at least my USB MIDI is better when using
hr timer.
I'll test amidiplay, but again, playing all MIDI instruments at the same
isn't the major problem, perhaps just for me, resp. for people with
'golden ears'.
The major issue is sync to audio recordings of MIDI instruments, while
doing audio recordings of other, resp. the same instruments again.
I e.g. do only have one DX7 and one Matrix-1000 and my TG33 (with vector
control) is broken, hence I can't use all outputs, but one stereo output
of the TG33.
I wish to be able to record a synth several times. This means that even
inaudible jitter will become audible, for a production.
Of course I won't record one drum after the other from any of my drum
modules, because this just would result in more noise, but recording the
snare or kick separated to other drum samples is needed, when doing the
mastering by Linux and using a compressor like JAMin.
Accumulation of jitter, caused by recording one instrument after the
other is breaking the groove.

I'll test amidiplay, but again, playing all MIDI instruments at the same

Lets try something very simple:
ONE)
- Take a very simple midi-file.
- Use 'aplaymidi' to send it from your PC to your external midi-drum
machine. - Use your drum-synth's "klick" or "woodblock" sound or
sth
very dry with a good attack.
- do a quick ear-test if you can hear midi-jitter?
- capture the audio-output of the external-midi-synth with arecord.
Rewind and do it again.
Post the two files and the used .mid on a web-server or some drop-box.
If you want to check yourself: Align the first-beat of the captured
audio files in a multi-track audio-editor. While it will involve a bit
of manual labor to quantify the jitter. It'll at least be solid evidence.
TWO)
- launch an external MIDI-metronome (eg your Atari ST)
- connect it to your PC
- use 'arecordmidi' to generate a .mid file from it.
Repeat at least once and post the two midi files somewhere for us to
download.
THREE)
midi-metronom -> PC -> external-synth ==> audio
This combines ONE+TWO. just use 'aconnect[gui]' to use
your PC as MIDI-THRU. and 'arecord' to record audio that comes
from your drum-synth.
Note, at the moment we're not interested in latency, but in jitter.
The ticks in the recorded audio file _should be_ at identical intervals
+- jitter.
The output of
cat /proc/asound/timers
and
cat /proc/asound/version
might be interesting

This has nothing to do with MIDI timing; mplayer can use the RTC (not
HPET) for audio/video synchronization to work around the 100 Hz limit of
the system timer on old Linux kernels.
