Alsa Modular,
is this one still under development??
I never have tested it and never saw a UI that I could use to controll
it with external USB controllers.
I'll check that ....

I'm not good at coding at all, but I think a more useable framework for a
softsynth, if you like to build it with an existing one, might be bristol.
Bristol is a synth emulator. It has a couple of synths already. But it might
not suffer, having a new filter or different oscillator in it, if Nick is OK
with that. The synths it emulates, are basically built from the components
(filters, oscs, etc.), that are in the engine. Then they are connected in a
particular way and get a GUI/CLI put on top of them. Bristol has, what I
would call MIDI learning. You can easily assing MIDI controls to controls of
the currently loaded synth and I think you can save them as well. Have a
look at his site:

The sweet thing about using this would be, that you have to implement the
new components and then there is an API - so I believe - for relatively
easily constructing the connections and the <UIs. I know only of the textUI,
which is very clever and helpful!

It seems to be still under development. Recently (within the last
year) they switched to QT4; if any other substantial changes have been
made I do not know.

Yes, its still maintained, changes are
more evolutionary rather then
revolutionary.
Have you checked out Minicomputer?

although its still not polyphon and no midi learning. I would love to
develope a plugin version of it but I am not sure about which format to
go. LV2 seems the right one but its convoluted and I am uncertain about
support in hosts at this point of time.
Problem is always to find time to develop something, its not that
developers are hanging around without ideas. Like everybody else I have
to pay my bills and apart from it in my case I am also artist. Everybody
has ideas whats missing under Linux and I have a very clear picture what
is necessary to do and what I am missing from other platforms.
Devs are needed indeed.

the calf-plugins team has a very nice lv2 host in git - and many other
wonderous things besides ;) - so it could be used standalone.

No, we don't! :-) We have a host for the internal API, and so the
plugins can be used standalone, but that's not the same as a
fully-featured LV2 host.
Unless you mean Zynjacku, but it has very little to do with Calf team
(except some minor LV2-related work I did for that project).
check it out perhaps.
That's always a good idea anyway - especially now I'm preparing for an
"official" release of the new version (with good-looking GUIs and new
plugins, all by Markus Schmidt). Any extra testing may help making the
release more stable and useful.

yummy! i've been using calf git for a while, but it feels kind of icky
to do a project with those plugins, especially since i got shot in the
foot by you guys before when you threw out the hi- and lowpass plugs
that i had been using in several sessions, on almost every track...
after an inconspicuous "git pull", i had piles and piles of "missing
plugin" errors in ardour and everything sounded crap :(
goes to show: there is a reason why pre-release software hasn't been
released yet. i lived and learned :)

if such a thing exists.
In that case - it might be worthwhile to find a maintainer for these
plugins as a separate project, as I already have difficulty maintaining
the core set due to lack of time. I'd say that for most people, those
plugins generally weren't very useful and only polluted the plugin list.

I thought the fact that these plugins required --enable-experimental to
be compiled in first place, and that they didn't even support stereo
signals, was enough of a warning. In worst case, you can always revert
to an old version, that still had those plugins.
However, in new projects, you should use Calf Filter instead. It is
stable, supports stereo and isn't going to be dropped in the near
future. It also does some things that you'd find desirable in this kind
of a plugin, for example the smoothing of cutoff value, avoiding some of
the "scratchy knob noise".

The only plugins that still have experimental status in current git are
fluidsynth and wavetable. For good reasons, too. The fluidsynth wrapper
plugin is not that stable or useful really, comparing to - say -
fluidsynth-dssi. The wavetable synth has lots of unimplemented
functionality, and lacks good wavetables too - basically, work in
progress, early stage.

This one is really nice, actually does the sound for the music I want to create.
Now I yust have to learn C++, understand the engine in C, understand
DSSI and off we go ;)

I don't know how hard this is once this synth is a DSSI plugin, but I think
4 or 8 voice polyphony and monotimbral would be enough.
Devs are needed indeed.
I do my best to get my skills up to a usable level.
