Here's a story that may give you all a good chuckle:
Last weekend Robin Gareus, our LAO guru has contacted me inquiring why there
was a ~1hr linuxaudio.org server downtime that took place that Sat. morning.
Luckily we now have an UPS that gives us almost 2 hours of offline power.
Hence, the server went through this unscathed. Yet, the network
infrastructure was also down so even though the server remained up, there
was no way of reaching it.
So, I went investigating what happened, and this is the reply I got from our
on-campus support:
Squirrel fried in transformer. Campus and part of downtown was out of power
on Saturday morning before the game. [this was a football game we had in
town that day with 10K+ visitors]

technically, you should add a phrase like "some animals were harmed
during the creation of this website" to the lao imprint. might cause a
public relations backlash, but then again, bad press is good press.

hmmm. now you have me thinking (ok foolishly, but still thinking)
technically, some animals are harmed during the creation of almost anything.
(everything?) granted, it may have happened on the other side of the world
and be totally unrelated but it was during the time frame of the creation.

Now, please salve your consciences. Linux is not culpable for this because the squirrel
was not in there to participate in the Linux website activity and the electricity that
fried the squirrel was stolen from many loads, perhaps including the Linux server; but it
was not ever available to the server, being transferred to the squirrel, however
unfortunately, prior to being used by any Linux activity. Sometimes a few nanoseconds
really make a difference.

Chuckle, sounds like some of the fireworks I've had in a tv transmitter, from
snakes and rodents getting into the high voltage stuff. We have about 7200
volts and 15 amps available in that supply, so over 100kw is available before
the breakers trip. Usually very messy, and several hours off the air while
we go run down some slabs of micarta 1/2" thick and 3" or more wide &
18"
long to rebuild terminal strips with. One such burnup actually blew a hole
about 3/4" in diameter in a 12 gauge steel wall. We don't often find enough
of the culprit to make a positive ID as to specie.
They didn't have that much of a fire if it was still identifiable as a
squirrel. :)

My bad, I enabled the "fry-squirrel" option in postfix's main.cf...
My deepest apologies to the families that wanted to watch the football
game.
