Mx41 minor update at

This wasn't on my todo list, but I just stumbled over the missing link
in the voice assign/stealing algorithm and couldn't help implementing
it. Just to check out if it really worked ... and I think it did :)
I now have voices in five assignment-ques:
silent // absolutely idle voices
released // voices about to become idle
excess holdpedal // elder voices than mentioned below ..
holdpedal // the two most recent voices for a given key
fingered // voices where the key is still pressed
... and a short two-voice que for each key to figure out the 'excess'
part.
Voice assign will at best find a silent voice and at worst a fingered
voice.
Rolls (tremolo?) now works proper without stealing highest or lowest
note, nor anything inbetween for that matter. Finally!
Is there room for improvement? Yes I think so ... It is now possible to
get 'clicks' with certain combinations of envelope and playingstyle. On
the other hand it is also quite easy to avoid, so I will work slowly on
this one.

This needs some explanation. The easy test scenario to provoke this
behaviour is:
choose A1 (Amsterdam, a phat organ)
Play an octave doubled bassnote three times in succession while holding
sustain-pedal.
Switch to A4 (DX kind of LA-Rhodes, 'Wheelmodulated III') while keeping
pedal down!
Helicopter around in a scale that fits with the organ-drone and watch
for the click when the excess organ voices are reused.
Caveat: This is a test scenario and do not appear naturally, at least
not for me. While playing with the 'Amsterdam' sound, I would most
likely at first fool around near middle C and then make my way down to
the finishing drone. And perhaps play the drone twice to make it fatter.
This will work always. Alternatively I could do a crescendo 'roll' on
the basses, but this will lead to clicks if extended indefinately.
To summarize:
1) I need the drone for some time, therefore I will not play it more
than twice (with holdpedal.)
2) I only need the drone temporarily while building up a new soundscape.
Therefore I can afford to make the drone fatter. I shall therefore
release the pedal well before any clicks gets audible.
Well ... it works for me :)

Hey there,
I just realised that Mx41 now supports both alsa and jack :).
I took it for a spin though the result was very confusing. It seems OSS is
still used even if alsa is detected, atleast it seemed I don't have to
connect anything in alsa to get my external keyboard to make sound through
it.
Also I was unable to switch patches, infact, nothing I did in the GUI seemed
to change anything...
Is there some beginners error I'm doing?

Hmmm, I had tried it as root, I tried as a normal user and it worked much
better. I could also switch patches in the GUI. Editing the sounds seemed
very tempermental though, I think I managed to change some parameter but not
a lot...
The GUI takes a little getting used to also, but for some reason that's the
norm for synths ;)
Lastly, updating it to a DSSI would be a great feat for the integration
possibilities.

Mx41 have supported alsa and jack since the renaming from Mx4 to mx41. A
limited version have been in circulation in beta since late autumn/early
winter with a warning that specs might change.

Correct. Mx41 will assume you'd like to play right away and grab midi-in
if possible. But if you start, say Rosegarden first, it will be happy to
supply just an Alsa interface. And yes, you can have one application
using the Alsa interface and still play along with it using OSS.

Running from a console, it will complain about not being chmoded root
4711. You can verify in main.c that it will only grab realtime
priveleges and after that resume to the user invoking the synth.
It worries me that you are not able to change parameters. Some of the
sounds in the build directory are playable, but mostly there for me to
decide that I am still within reasonable limits. If you have trouble
editing parameters to your own liking, then something is seriously
wrong!
When I switched to mdk-10.1 I noticed that the threading model had
changed in major way. I did appropiate changes to accomodate for this
but have no practical way of testing for backward compatibility.
The GUI takes a little getting used to also, but for

What can I say but: Welcome to my nightmare ;)
I use a trackball to point at sliders, and then page up/down/arrowkeys
or even numeric keys for exact value.

Ah. I got it working, the synth was sending out midi on channel four or some
such, so all changes I made to the instance on ch 1 had no effect what so
ever. ;-) beginners error.
Ofcourse the editing started to work also. I was going to complain that it was
hard to edit the settings for just one oscillator when it occured to me that
there was a volume for each of them. Turning it down made it work out just
fine.
Not that the sound I got out of it really sounded like anything ;) I'm quite
inexperienced with editing synths.

Grabbing a the newest copy from today will get you rid off the
occasional integer overflow in the envelopes. Makes life less weird :)
