Hello,
qsampler gives me this strange error:
Loading gig file 'NON_MODAL '/home/fons/FreePiano.gig''...gig::Engine
error: Failed to load instrument, cause: Can't open "NON_MODAL
'/home/fons/FreePiano.gig'"
I've no idea where the 'NON_MODAL' thing is coming from, or how to
get rid of it...

NON_MODAL stands for loading the gig file in asynchronous mode (modeless:)
Probably you're running an outdated LSCP implementation. When did you last
checked out your linuxsampler?

OK, re-installed everything from CVS, and managed to get it to compile
and install (was rather tricky).
FreePiano.gig now loads (100 %), MIDI is connected, all channels,
but no sound :-( The stream / voice counters remain at 0. Same midi
to aeolus on a second sound card works.
The Help panel says: GIG (libgig) support disabled....

How are you routing MIDI to linuxsampler? May I guess you're connecting
the alsa sequencer ports alright? If you're sure that's nothing wrong on
your setup, try matching the midi channels between source and the sampler
channel, instead of settting it to "All". Oh, check whether your MIDI
source names its MIDI channels by number (1-16) bor is it by address
(0-15), or vice-versa.

Don't worry with that. libgig is only used on qsampler for showing actual
instrument names from a selected .gig file. It has nothing to do with the
linuxsampler engine functionality.

Yes, using qjackctl's MIDI patcher.
If you're sure that's nothing wrong on

That was in fact the first thing I tried, before switching to 'All'.
Will try again later today (when back at home).
Another point: I'am a complete dummy w.r.t. the auto tools and in this case
I had to manually copy the standard scripts (config.guess & friends) to the
linuxsampler, liblscp and qsampler directories. For other packages this seems
to happen automagically, or they are just included.
What is the recommended sequence of commands when starting a build from
linuxsampler CVS ?

Not quite. When bootstrapping from CVS you should run:
make -f Makefile.cvs
for each component (linuxsampler, liblscp, qsampler) and only then the
usual "automagical" ./configure && make && make install
sequence.

On my return home, tried things again and everything worked !
I must have been less than awake this morning :-)
