Greetings:
I've received a few notes that indicate people are interested in
revising the look & feel of the site at linux-sound.org.
If you're currently working on such a project *please* make your
intentions public. There are at least two projects working towards the
same end, and this is truly one wheel that does not need reinvention.
Better that folks work together on it.

I started working on a dokuwiki project that I will announce soon.
my intentions are to combine a useful application with fun coding time,
while learning more about dokuwiki. influenced by reading
[linux-audio-dev] Re: Linux Documentation - I remembered how I struggled
to get started with linux audio...
goals are to provide a long living, maintainable and portable database,
which can be branched and merged to and from mirror sites under GPL,CC;
that the LAD/LAU community will pick up to maintain.
The content is an archive of linux sound applications, projects, etc,..
imported from linux-sound.org with the best of both worlds: external
links and/or [links to] local resources in a wiki page.
local articles, how-to's, wiki pages, discussions, etc. are not part of
the main database, but can be included/distributed as a separate wiki
namespace.
I am not in a position to provide major content improvements, edit or
rewrite articles etc. - what is yet missing is an interface to the
mailing-list archive.
I was not meaning to be counter productive. I figured that starting
a discussion would take much much longer than creating a prototype to
start a discussion.. anyway it's just been 2 days. crazy how fast this
community has become..

Adoption of linux-sound.org into linuxaudio.org is a continuing standing
offer, but obviously this is something that the community needs to embrace,
rather than having a hostile takeover which will leave a sour aftertaste in
everyone's mouths.
Provided that the community is fine with this, the proposed course of action
would be as follows:
1)generate apps.linuxaudio.org subdomain and port over a summary list of the
applications (similar to Dave's format)
2) plug every listed app to the docs.linuxaudio.org wiki where we would
build largest and most comprehensive documentation database
Alternately, we could simply do everything inside docs.linuxaudio.org, but I
feel that the usefulness of Dave's pages would be somewhat lost unless the
docs would also have a nice categorized listing of available apps.

yes, a meta-index (1) should be kept separate from the documentation (2)
itself.
I would like to see this meta-index not as fixed (machine readable)
database but as a wiki that can contain extra references, or provide
quick information...

we should not draw a line between app-list or doc-wiki pages, but rather
between maintained/edited and public editable content. if you like the
analogy: stable / unstable distribution.
public discussions evolve into signed-off articles and an index is kept
separately (but can be linked/generated automatically..)
i guess 90% of all the requests are either direct page access referring
a search engine and people who will read an entire article, howto etc.
so it might lack the critical mass to support a index site.
Only few users will actually browse an index, but there are not [m]any
alternatives to linux-sound.org when it comes to finding different tools
for a certain task. so someone should keep that up...
I ain't planning hostile takeovers either. In fact I do this in my spare
time and will gladly return to other tasks. I have found a company to
provide free hosting, but my aim is to build a distributable system..
This can certainly be part of linux-sound.org linuxsound.org or who ever
wants to donate a domainname and webspace.
I'm only experimenting with possible solutions. I won't have the time to
become editor of linuxaudio.org but I'm certainly open for cooperation
with apps.linuxaudio.org. linux-sound.sonologic.nl is far from a proper
proposal.
