Hallo,
while trying to build Dave Griffith's fluxus, which uses liblo, on
Debian, I've hit a very strange error. It boils down to g++ not
finding the symbols exported in lo/lo.h. I stripped down the code,
where it fails to this supershort C++-file:

//
#include <lo/lo.h>
lo_address m_Destination;
// ---------- end
Trying to compile this with
$ g++ -c OSCServer.cpp
will give these errors:
$ g++-3.2 -c OSCServer.cpp
OSCServer.cpp:2: 'lo_address' is used as a type, but is not defined as
a type.
$ g++-3.3 -c OSCServer.cpp
OSCServer.cpp:2: error: 'lo_address' is used as a type, but is not
defined as a type.
$ g++-4.0 -c OSCServer.cpp
OSCServer.cpp:2: error: 'lo_address' does not name a type
liblo is installed from the Debian package:
ii liblo0-dev 0.22-1 Lightweight OSC library --development files
I think, g++ finds <lo/lo.h>, otherwise it should complain about a missing
header, but then it doesn't want to use it.
Does anyone have an idea, what is going wrong here?

Check your version of liblo. The version in Debian (even testing)
and Ubuntu is a bit behibd what Dave has on his web site.

My problem with liblo was, that the version I had in /usr/local was
way old and shouldn't have been there at all. It works now, after I
deleted it.

I'm running Breezy too, and I just compiled the liblo package from
Dapper and installed that.
What you do is:
- Go to your local Ubuntu mirror site.
- Find /ubuntu/pool/universe/libl/liblo/
- Grab the three files:
liblo_0.22-1.dsc
liblo_0.22-1.diff.gz
liblo_0.22.orig.tar.gz
- Then do:
dpkg-source -x liblo_0.22-1.dsc
cd liblo-0.22/
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b -uc
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i liblo*.deb
And you're done. Probably a bit easier than converting your machine
to Debian testing :-).

I just found, that using Ubuntu for my style of work provides no
advantages at all. They put a lot of work into tight Desktop
integration and stuff while I just use a command line and don't need
all this. The software I use a lot is older in Ubuntu than in Debian
testing (Pd, blackbox, now liblo).
Basically I made my Ubuntu system behave like a Debian system in most
ways, which was a lot of work and isn't guaranteed to survive
upgrades.
When upgrading from Hoary to Breezy a lot of stuff broke and to fix
it, I actually had to run Gnome-tools I didn't start in months. E.g.
when I changed the default language from German to English,
Gnome-terminal didn't accepted and displayed umlauts anymore. I found
no way to have english messages but still be able to type ä. Then
gnome-terminal doesn't accept the "-ls" option anymore and tells me to
use some Properties Menu and create a "Profile" for it. I mean, I had
a "profile", which was a keyboard shortcut I configured for bbkeys to
run "gnome-terminal -ls". Why do they disable a command line option,
when it is working just fine? To force users to read manuals and open
Properties menus?
So I'm back to using rxvt again, just as on my main and plain Debian
box. There were several similar things happening when upgrading.
Nothing really bad, but I learned from this, that Ubuntu is not for
everyone and definitely not for me. I'm not saying it's a bad
distribution, it isn't. I'm just not in the target audience, I think.

Meh, they're just cleaning up rarely used context menu items, they're
not trying to deprecate the command line.

Yeah, lo_address used to be called something else, but it was in the dim
and distant, pre-stable past.
