hello everybody!
i've finally got an usb-audio card for my linux audio madness, i've
taken a tascam us122, beacuse of the good support it has, infact i was
able to use it, i've not tested it extensively because i was moving and
my laptop had a desperate need of a reinstalling :P
i've reinstalled this ibook with a net-installed debian sid and the
first thing i've done was compiling the same alsa and kernel versions,
linux vanilla 2.6.8.1 and alsa-driver 1.0.6a, alsa-lib 1.0.6 but all
alsa wont work...
with the internal powermac audio card (which was working) i got a
undefined referece, in compile time (but not fatal, since the module is
compiled) and in inserting time:

but i can live without it, i have the oss module and i plan to not use
it anymore, because the tascam card will be conencted to everything in
my setup, but the strangest things happened when i tried to plug the
usb-usx2y module: a variety of freezes, kernel panics, oops, so i've
tried to compile different versions of alsa and kernel, i've tried
combinations of:
linux 2.4.27, 2.6.8, 2.6.7, 2.6.9-rc2, 2.6.9-rc2-bk9
alsa 1.0.6, 1.0.6a, 1.0.7rc1, alsa-cvs (alsa cvs was broken)
now i got the same error over and over again, the hotplug scrits are
loading the firmware, the module is correctly loaded and the card is
powering up well and the usb led keeps to stay on, but, when i try to
launch jack or an audio application i got some messages regarding
"sequence errors" and i have to kill the application via ctrl-c, if i
restart the application i have a freeze (no kernel panics or such)

everyone knows this issue? or knows the versions of alsa/kernel this
card will work well? the device is surely working because i use well on

Erm, yes. All of you using ohci usb with recent snd-usb-usx2y will know this
issue.
For the moment I can only recommend to use an earlier version. (don't konw
exactly which one....don't have no ohci-usb....)
I've got something cooking to solve this, but don't know when it will be
ready.

In the mean time, I'm eager to follow any steps you may suggest, to get
this issue squared once and for all. After all, my US-224 is better suited
for my laptop use (ohci), than with my desktop (uhci) where it runs in
excellent condition.
One thing to note, the Tascam's US-224 user manual has specific references
to which OHCI host controller is known to work. This is the relevant
excerpt:
The following chipsets have been successfully run with the US-224:
Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
Intel 82371 SB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
Intel 82801 AA PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller
As you see, the only OHCI one is the ALi, exactly the one I have on my
laptop. And, did I mentioned that it works with Windows XP on this same
laptop?

thanks for the infos!! infact downgrading to 1.0.5a works well..
uhm.. not really well, with oss emulation it has a PERFECT sound, the
only alsa app i use (would to) is jack, but it will kick itself out
after really few second of operation, even with -R switches and so..

whit -s switch it will more or less work, but the sound is crappy as
hell :(
someone has a clue on what could be? is the machine that's slow? (ibook
g3 700mhz) or it can be some software issue?

(apart of using mac os x, but i really want to use this cool audio apps
"we" all have)

The fact is that 1.0.7rc1 with this usx2y+ohci patch works fine with alsa
native interface (e.g. aplay -D hw:x), but jackd hangs on some
pcm_prepare() loop, being ultimately killed by jack_watchdog.
I can't tell for sure, but AFAICR and Antonio seems to confirm, this jackd
behaviour is exactly the same as the one of 1.0.5a: aplay OK, jackd HANGS.
That said, I guess we're back in business nevertheless, on the OHCI arena
at least.
OTOH, Karsten is also cooking a experimental usx2y jack backend that
recently made a great success around here (erm, that was on my desktop, a
UHCI based one). Very promising stuff. So promising, that I've already
added support for it on my qjackctl CVS tree :)
I just wonder if we can merge these and test whether things get any
better. But Karsten may have even better ideas... ;)
