Greetings:
I've been having some problems with my desktop machine during and
after booting into Planet CCRMA RH9. At first I started getting some
kernel panics booting into the system, then I started having trouble
during operation of the system. X would suddenly freeze shortly after I
started it, usually after the first mouse move.
Okay, so I don't panic because I have another drive in the same box
running FC3, so I figure I'll just boot into that system instead and
transfer files before everything heads south. At first everything seemed
fine on that drive, but soon after I started using it FC3 started
showing the same symptoms with sudden reboots and total freezes of the
machine.
I've been able to transfer a lot of stuff to my laptop via the local
network, but mounting the RH9 drive is very dangerous, things can freeze
at any moment. Alas, there's still stuff on that drive that I'd like to
retrieve.
So there's something wrong with the box. Can anyone point me in the
right direction to begin troubleshooting this machine ? Could it be RAM
? The graphics card ? Or what ?? And how can I test things on the
hardware side, i.e., what utilities are indicated ?

you can get an ide-to-usb box, open it and mount the disk directly on
the laptop... this little things are really useful in this bad times..

mmh.. the freeze-on-mouse-move issue is strange, maybe it could be the
mobo chipset??
memtest86 is THE tool for checking the ram, for hardware side the only
thing i can think is to toggle all hardware components and adding them
one-by-one till you experience the problem again... or by installing the
hardware on an another machine

A bad powersupply is also something that can occasionally throw some
REALLY weird symptoms in the mix. See if you can get it testeed(Or test
it yourself with a volt meter) I am assuming you didnt change any other
hardware configs then? If you did restore whatever you changed and try
it then.
Like someone else suggested, ram is another good place to check for nice
odd symptoms

I think there could be many causes for this.
You could check your memory by booting into memtest86+
Disk diagnostics..
try smartctl -t long /dev/hda (or whatever the disk is).
Lastly, if you are using an Asus a7n8x or similar nforce-2 based
motherboard, it could be the same problem that I had. See:

Though I think this problem has been fixed in recent kernels.
If it is happening regardless of box when you connect to that disk, then I
think it is most likely that the disk is broken.

My thanks to all respondents for their suggestions, but sad to say, I
got no joy. At this time the machine is unusable and I'll probably have
to take it in for repair or just buy a new mobo. I now can't get beyond
the boot stage, it usually dies with a kernel panic either right away or
shortly after startup. Big bummer.
I removed all cards, installed a new CPU fan, and tried booting from a
Knoppix disk. The Knoppix live CD also failed with a kernel panic, which
probably means I have a hardware problem either with the RAM or the CPU.
Btw, I've been running RH9 happily on this box for quite a while, it's
hardly a new installation
I have access to an identical box I'll get to try either tomorrow or
the day after, but this one's DOA for this evening. :(

If there are little brown spots on the top of some condensers on the mobo,
then they are fried and you have to get a new one.(unless you fancy soldering
multi-layer boards) Apperently some factories saved a few tenths of pennies
by using substandard parts.
The power-supply is another good candidate for replacement.

RAM is the most likly cause IMHO, but If the motherboard is oldish (couple
of years or so) then its worth eyeballing the motherboard for bulging
capacitors, I lost my studio PC to this and we lost a load at work.
The tops should be slightly concave and clean, if theres any sign of brown
gunge (technical term) or bulging then the motherboard is a gonner.
There was a bad batch of capacitors for a while from a major manufacturer,
but I suspect all the bad boards have blown allready by now.
