What is the procdure to get timidity++ to work with an OSS raw midi in,
live?

Hi Jens:
I assume you want to play TiMidity as a softsynth ? Here's how I set
it up for use with a MIDI sequencer:
timidity -iA -B2,8 -Os -A100 -EFreverb=0 -EFchorus=0
where:
-iA sets up TiMidity as a sound server
-B2,8 buffer settings
-Os output format
-A100 amplitude percentage
-EFreverb sets reverb to 0
-EFchorus sets chorus to 0
The effects settings reduce CPU consumption. Btw, TiMidity will start to
hog the CPU after a while.
It appears as a client in the ALSA patch bay, so I just connect any
available input device to it and I'm wailin'...
Of course, if that isn't what you want to do you can just ignore this
message... :)

Uhmm ... you mention ALSA so we may not be on the same level? I was
asking for OSS (Yes I know I'm an old fashioned bastard reluctant to
change a working system.)
But otherwise you are right, I would like to learn how to use timidity++
as a realtime synthesizer module.

Hi Jens:
I realize you were asking about OSS. Are you using OSS/Linux or the
deprecated OSS/Free kernel modules ? If you're using OSS/Linux Dev has
told me about their new 'cuckoo' technology that allows OSS/Linux apps
to work in an ALSA environment. I haven't checked how truly 'ALSA-like'
cuckoo may be, but I'll try to test it asap. That might let you do what
you want. Othewise, I think you're not going to be able to utilize
TiMidity as a softsynth outside of an ALSA environment. If I understand
correctly TiMidity will only function as a server under ALSA.
Why are you using OSS instead of ALSA ?

Short answer:
I bought a second hand computer with a soundcard supported by none
except for some freaks at sourceforce(sp?). The driver was incomplete
and after a while I managed to fsck up everything. So I went back to the
attic and picked out the old SB16. Now the expert system managing new
hardware additions refuses to see this card ... The good news is that I
managed to get it up and running manually. I have a clicke-di-click
userinterface that gives me the option to choose between OSS and ALSA,
except that running ALSA is a nono since, according to the system, I
have no soundcard ...
If you want the long answer I can mail you off the list :)

It appers to have something running under OSS as well. When I do some
testing to figure out what is going on, I get this:
$ ./timidity/timidity -ir 777
/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
Couldn't open dsp device (`d')
bind: Permission denied
So I can make it open /dev/dsp and a socket.

need a newer version ? I'd like JACK support with TiMidity anyway, I
think the latest version now does, yes ?
