Another reason: there are some bugs in their code
(version 1.15) that
cause an immedient crash if one compiles the program from source code,
whereas if installed directly from the Ubuntu repository it works
correctly. So the code base used by Ubuntu must be different from the
source code at Github.
If there should be any patches, they would be available by the source
package.
Start with a Debian tracker search:
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/horgand
It provides the Link to the Ubuntu source package:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/horgand
The reasons of the crash are some buffer overflows,
easily found using
valgrind.
One patch inside the Ubuntu source package is named
"03-buffer_overflow.patch".
Did you compare with sourceforge?
