Having a SIP connection can be a god-send when you have lots of strings
to figure out verbally ..
Jeff Pulver used to have a free sip service at pulver.com, but a year
ago (or some such) he warned that the service would be discontinued.
Something to do with Facebook premium service IIRC ...
Problem: Although Ekiga.net works just fine for me, I cannot set up my
significant other on that network. It appears like it only works if you
have an Ekiga client?
There is no Ekiga client for ancient Mac's ...
Question: Any suggestions for an alternative SIP service?

Hi Jens!
I don't have a real solution to your problem. But would it be an option to
use googletalk? This should be accessible from all systems via the online-app
or via some jingle-capable clients. Might this help?

Googletalk's homepage says that it requires Wndows XP/Vista? I am no
Stallmanista, but I just do not have a legit copy of either, and even if
I had had, it wouldn't help at the other end of the (Mac) connection.
It's an eMac with no known Linux drivers for the (fake) network card
available. So advocating a conversion from a Mac/Photoshop combo to
Linux/GIMP would leave her dead in the water regarding Internet.
Well well, all that was asked for was somewhere to register a SIP
connection without a lot of to do. Anyone?

a short note about gooletalk, to clearn things up: There's a real program,
like start it from your disk and execute, that requires windows. But there's
supposed to be a system-independent net-app, something like a java-applet or
so, which you can run from the browser. And under Linux there's at least
asterisk that can do it.
Other tools you might try for Ekiga, is freeswitch in connection with some
SIP-phone app. Freeswitch seems to be something like asterisk only smaller.
Or if this doesn't work, there are some free jabber services. Jabber now
offers Jingle, which is a Voice over IP. Jabber is a free xml format. So there
should be apps for all systems. Under Linux there's telepathy, not sure about
their jingle status, but there should be others. Googeltalk is nothing but a
jingle dialect, from what I heard.

OK Julien, I understand that you have been looking into these matters,
but isn't asterix for when you want to set up your own service? - Like
the one Pulver had before Facebook?
Anyway, since there are only two connections involved, I think the
problem should be solvable by doing a direct computer<->computer
connection, no? No need for signing up for some additional rip-off plan
with my dearest phone/internet-maphia.
IIRC, the (ancient) Mac-client has that option, somewhere.
(Now if I only had had legs two miles long so that I could be in two
places at once, debugging and supervising that things happens the way
they are supposed to do, then ...)

You're not completely mistaken about asterisk. It's possible to set up your
own service, but you can also use it for your own purpose only. I've heard of
people using it on a kind of router/home telephone organisation box for
answeringservice, intelligent this and that. :-)
But I think the best besides Jabber/Jingle/Gtalk you've heard here is indeed
skype. I'm surer of that than of gtalk with their online applet. Because I've
never heard of it in use under Linux/Mac. :-)

Shouldn't be to hard to find a voip-provider in your country. In germany there
is for example sipgate.de which provides you with a real local number, voice-
mail and stuff and you only pay the minutes you call someone. Prepaid...
And there are others. Maybe google gives you a hint?

I've been using VoipCheap for quite a while with Twinkle and other SIP
clients. Service is free for SIP calls, you only pay (sometimes ;-) )
when calling phones.
I see they now have a web signup form for non-Windows users: in the past
you had to use a Windows app for signup only, ironically.
Voice quality is good, and by the way, rates to call phones were (are?)
quite lower than Skype, and free for calls to landline numbers in most
countries.

Skype needs a current version of Mac OS X (to be able to connect? ...)
I am not sure about why, but as an aside I can tell you that the most
recent version of Swedish Wordlist for Firefox demands that you have a
spanking brand new Firefox v3.x installed, or else! I am not sure about
the reasononing behind that one either ...
Dependency Hell is not a Linux exclusive I suppose.

Hey, reading that Skype isn't the ideal solution, googletalk might still get a
trial with its webapp. :-) A gmail account is enough, I think, to get
googletalk as an aside. The other party simply needs to be online and have
their gtalk app open. That's the theory...
