[linux-audio-user] m-audio quattro and alsa mixer

hi, i've just got a m-audio quattro (very nice :) and have alsa running happily... but i'm having trouble starting the alsamixer. i've copied in Patrick Shirkey's scripts for .asoundrc and qinit, but when i run qinit it segfaults :(... alsamixer says 'no mixer elems found' and when i run gnome-alsamixer i just get a blank screen with 'USB Audio Quattro' at the top. i'm getting sound fine out of applications such as xmms though... although SpiralLoops crashes and/or produces digital glitch noise when i import a sound.... any ideas? thanks in advance m -- iriXx www.iriXx.org copyleft: creativity, technology and freedom? info(a)copyleftmedia.org.uk www.copyleftmedia.org.uk _ ( ) ascii ribbon against html email X / \ cat /dev/sda1 > /dev/dsp *** stopping make sense ***

[linux-audio-user] SACD backup?

Greetings -- I've got two toys recently, an HP200e DVD+RW and a Sony NCD650 5 DVD/SACD/CD/VCD player. HP backs up a DVD in 5 minutes, 24 minutes reburn. Sony plays the transcoded VCDs, which are inferior and I just did it to see that fact. But with the SACD, I can't find any info on ripping it. Can I use my DVD+RW HP to read it in? And why isn't there toslink output on the Sonly for SACD -- it says it's for DVD only, and indeed nothing comes out when I use the optical, I have to connect 6 cables and switch the receiver into DVD 5.1 ch mode to hear the SACD, and then the subwoofer is surprisingly soft (even with the +10dB max increase on the Sony). Mind you, my sub is a 3 ft tall Yamaha w/Helmholtz folded tube inside, it rocks the house with DVDs... Any hints on SACD backup would be appreciated! Cheers, Alexy

[linux-audio-user] freqtweak trick of the day

Here is neat hack with the pitch scaling capability of freqtweak: Pseudo Formant Corrected Pitch Scaling To avoid the chipmunk effect when pitch scaling voices, try this in freqtweak: Hold down Control and drag from about 1 or 2kHz off the left edge at the desired pitch adjust. This effectively shifts the fundamental of the voice but leaves the higher frequency formant information alone. It definitely has artifacts, but really isn't too bad on female voices. Play with the cutoff point (reset the filter with Ctrl-Alt-Right click and try again). Using a log freq scale (middle-click) might help find the best cutoff. [linux-audio-user] latency questions

I was running through the low-latency howto and I ran into a couple things that seem to be hindering process. First off, I'll mention that I'm using a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop. I'm running debian unstable with 2.4.19. 1) DMA transer won't enable. I've enabled DMA transfers in the kernel as suggested by the howto. However, I'm unable to turn on dma access with hdparm. I'm told the operation is not permitted. 2) IRQ mess. dmesg lists that almost every device that is detected is on irq 10, including the onboard sound (i8x0) and video card (nVidia). As a result, in X, I get static and pops as the audio is delayed. Searching further, I noticed a message saying the APIC wasn't being used due to a buggy bios provided by Dell. This could explain why everything is pushed to IRQ 10. Has anyone had these problems, and more importantly, gotten around them? I'm not sure if the bios problem mentioned is accurate for the 2650. Looking through the kernel source, it clumps a bunch of models together. I'm tempted to hack through that and see if it does crash... Thanks Greg --- -

[linux-audio-user] freqtweak release 0.4.3

After troubleshooting configuration problems with several users, I believe I have fixed the problem with the configure script that prevented some people from building freqtweak. Anyone who had problems should definitely try the new release. Along with that, you get a 4096 freq bin mode, and a few tiny bugfixes. http://freqtweak.sourceforge.net/ I added a short example of how to pipe alsaplayer through freqtweak and out your speakers without messing with JACK patchbays (see Usage Tips section). jlc

[linux-audio-user] midid - switching external and internal midi

Hi all, I have a Hoontech digital XG and a C-Media CMI (onboard) soundcard in my machine. The external midi is now connected to the Hoontech digital XG (ymfpci driver) and accessible by /dev/snd/midiC1D0. The hoontech card also has a internal midi synth, but I can't find how to activate it. Does anyone know how to do so? Do I need a new module? a different device? some control program? thanks, Olivier
