hi, I just bought one of these little boxes (Shuttle Spacewalker XPC SN41G2 nForce2 Aluminium Barebones System - AMD Athlon XP to use for an installation and have installed redhat9 on it and soon will be planetccrmaing it - it is a very quiet machine as it comes and i believe you can get an optional super quiet power supply for it - very easy to build/configure - i'll let you know if i run into any audio worries. [linux-audio-user] running jack as non-root?

Hi Now googled around without results. The question is what is the recommended way to run jack and jack aware applications as a non root user. I saw something about capabilites at ccrma, but I cannot se how it is done (I know it is in the 2.4 kernels). I am running Gentoo with reiserfs, so I hope it doesn't depend on using ext2/3 extended attributes...any recommendations? Best Regards Hasse

[linux-audio-user] drum loops, samples,

Hi, While testing my new system configuration tonight Bob Josland, the drummer for my band, and I produced some Ardour drum sessions. The print quality is good enough for samples. The playing is Budweiser influenced and marginal for loops unless someone is willing to do some editing. If anyone is interested, I have alot of Ardour drum sessions that can be licensed appropriately and released. I have no time to study licensing so all suggestions would be appreciated, i.e. License Green because it enables commercial use, etc. I can't invest any time editing the sessions for multitrack loop libraries or samples. I'd prefer to find one or two people that are willing to do the editing, categorizing, etc. It's concievable that I could release many styles, time signatures, tempos and mixes. I can't make any promises though because time is always a challange. ron-bob07.mp3 is eight tracks; kick, snare, hat, rack-R, rack-L, floor, over-L, over-R. Aside from panning and reverb (lexicon) on the snare there's almost no mixing. The lexicon is the source of noise in the mix, the multitrack prints have no appreciable noise. The ring in the snare could be obtrusive depending on the song. The style is raggae or beergae at 125bpm. There are enough parts in this six minute piece to construct verses, choruses, intro, outro, bridges, etc. http://www.multitrack.us/~parker/music/ron-bob07.mp3. hi all, i'm currently mulling over the idea of getting one of those really small shuttle xpcs for use as a quasi-portable linux-based audio box/desktop replacement, and was wondering if anybody had used them before and had suggestions or encountered caveats/hardware problems/quality control issues/etc. apparently the amd-based systems use an integrated realtek audio chip that is supported under alsa, but i'd probably put a better audio interface in the one available pci slot anyways. thanks, glyn

[linux-audio-user] midi issue and Event EZBus letter

Hi: Sorry for the general-ness of this message, but I have hooked up my Motu USB MIDI Express XT (thanks to Clemens) to my Linux Planet CCRMA box and it is being seen with everything falling in nicely; and I have the ability to make the connections in Jack. I make them and use a Nord Lead II as my main controller, but I cannot get Muse or Specimen or anything MIDI related to see Midi events. I see the signal coming Out of my Midi XT interface, but something is not seen in the applications. In Muse I register my Midi interface ok, but actually pressing a key and getting anything is a mystery. Could anyone give me some ideas on this one? thank you for any help given, gk p.s.--I wrote Event Electronics a short email (see below) regarding a possible driver for their EZBus mixer/controller unit (a fantastic piece of hardware). Hope I represented the Linux community ok on this. Bash me if I am off on what I wrote :) Hi: I bought an EZBus a couple of years back and I have had a lot of success with it, considering it to be one of the best purchases I have ever made. I use it every day and have no regrets. Also, technical support with you guys has always been really great, maybe the best I have ever experienced (could you guys give MOTU some lessons? ;) But, two issues that I think are a real drag about the EZBus: 1)if a person wants to setup the EZBus for an OSX rig, then the Mix Librarian and Midi Editor for assigning CC's and faders requires a Windows PC! I just don't get this. 2)Not to push the issue, but if you would make a stable driver out of the goodness of your heart and issue it to the Linux community, then follow up with an announcement on the Linux Audio Development/Users mailing list, you would pick up a ton of business. You wouldn't even have to give official support to the Linux users, but a driver for them would swing lots of business your way. A free driver to this community doesn't hurt your company because no one can duplicate the hardware. This is the reason why I WILL purchase an RME or an M-Audio soundcard instead of your EZ8 optical card. I referred a friend of mine to your EZ8 card and he bought one, but he is a Windows user. Needless to say he has been happy with it, but I am amazed that yet another manufacturer can't seem to see that the Linux community is untapped. Most manufacturers just seem to see the dread of writing a Linux driver, but can't see that writing one that is tied to a hardware box (like the EZBus) is a no lose situation. Correct me if I'm wrong on this. Ok, I'll get off of my soapbox. I just hate to see a great product limited to a few people, in this case, Windows users. Anyone looking for a small format mixer/controller I would refer to your product (yours is the product to beat as far as I'm concerned), but the above two issues indicate to me that you guys just aren't looking ahead. Hope I haven't been too harsh, thanks for good product that you are making :) gk

Thanks, I'll give 0.6.3 a try. Anyone else have problems/successes with Rosegarden4 0.9.6 and audio recording? This would help me determine whether my problem has something to do with my build, system configuration, or what. [linux-audio-user] usb, firewire, or cardbus device with 44.1khz digital out?

Can anyone point me to a usb, firewire, or cardbus device with 44.1khz digital output* that will work with the 2.6 kernel and ALSA? *must not resample ala the soundblaster stuff or edirol ua-1d I checked the ALSA soundcard matrix but it just shows a generic EZ-USB page for every USB product. There also appear to be various incompatibilities with the 2.6 kernel, and it seems that every working card I find resamples to 48 khz. Thanks in advance! Background info: I'm trying to use my laptop as a transport of sorts so I can feed my FLAC encoded CDs to a nice DAC. I'm also getting into CSound and super collider so I'd like some decent fidelity output from my laptop for the stuff I make. I don't need a ton of extra features 'cause those cost money (VXpocket v2 = $390 = yikes). Except for the previous problems with local apic and the problems with the intel8x0/ac97 modules, both solved now, it has been great, especially the built-in soundcard. I can actually run jack with a frame size of 32 (to much xruns to be usable though), very nice. The biggest problem now is the noise. It does _not_ make much noise, but when running hot the power supply fan changes speed all the time which is extremely annoying. That problem is probably/hopefully solved in the newer versions though. --
