[linux-audio-user] quattro distortion under mandrake 9.0 - more details

hi all... firstly, please forgive me for crossposting - im trying to find the most appropriate list for the problems i've been experiencing with loud distorted noise running the usb quattro under mandrake 9.0.... i've ascertained now that it isnt a conflict with X, or with the mouse, as i booted into runlevel 3 and played a wav from the command line with exactly the same results. i had my doubts about this anyhow as i'm running this on a thinkpad 600e - it doesnt have much in the way of video acceleration from what i gather (NeoMagic 256 i think is the graphics chip).... i've been messing around adding and subtracting stuff from sysvinit and loading modules manually to see what might be conflicting, i've tried the mwave modem as well, as modems have often been the culprit for device conflicts, but this doesnt seem to make any difference. so far i've drawn a blank... it puzzles me, as i was happily running alsa for the usb quattro under mandrake 8.2 with no problems whatsoever. before i wipe everything (again!) and go back to 8.2 in desperation.... does anyone know of any issues or differences between sound under mdk 8.2 and 9.0? or any known issues with the quattro driver that might cause this kind of heavily distorted sound? i've checked it isnt a fault with my quattro as i ran it under windows (yuk!) and found that it ran fine. the only difference in my setup that might be worth noting is that under 8.2 i didnt realise that mandrake installed its own alsa - i grabbed a tarball from alsa-project.org and just installed it over the top and it seemed to work fine. with 9.0 i've decided to go with mandrake's alsa rpms, simply because i went through hell with conflicts between 9.0's rpms and the tarballs earlier... on this fresh install i kept things simple. maybe i should switch back to tarball? or maybe i should upgrade from the supplied alsa 0.9.rc2 ? were there changes in the way usb is treated in 9.0 as compared to 8.2 perhaps?... i can also get the distortion down to a listenable level - although still very much present - by playing mp3s in alsaplayer with the volume level down to 1%.... this is hardly satisfactory though and doesnt seem to work in any other apps (doesnt work at all under oss emulation)... sound level has always started out very loud with the quattro but never distorted like this... i've never had this problem at all until i installed mdk 9.0... any suggestions would be very gratefully received! thanks in advance, m~ -- iriXx www.iriXx.org copyleft: creativity, technology and freedom? info(a)copyleftmedia.org.uk www.copyleftmedia.org.uk _ ( ) ascii ribbon against html email X / \ cat /dev/sda1 > /dev/dsp *** stopping make sense ***

[linux-audio-user] Filesystem Latency

All, Mark Knecht has run Benno Senoner's Latency Test program on ext2, ext3, fat32, and reiser filesystems and has graciously sent me his write-up and graphs. Hello, I've been trying to compile tapiir (0.6) but I'm getting the following error during configure: checking for numericsort in -lfltk... no configure: error: missing fltk but I _do_ have fltk installed. I tried with fltk1.1.1 and 1.1.2. Trying to run the binary version I get a message that libfltk.so.1 is missing so I checked and linked libfltk.so.1.1 to libfltk.so.1 Then, the app starts segfaults. gdb reports this: Starting program: /home/mis/downloads/tapiir-0.6/debian/tapiir/bin/tapiir [New Thread 1024 (LWP 16620)] [New Thread 2049 (LWP 16621)] [New Thread 1026 (LWP 16622)] Scheduler set to Round Robin with priority 99... [linux-audio-user] ardour cvs

Anyone else having problems with some of the latest cvs ardour versions not being able to start new projects or load old ones? Every time I try to start a new one or load an old one the program just closes. Is there something I'm forgetting to configure? Jonathan

[linux-audio-user] Terratec 24/96 slight speed adjustment

I don't know if this was covered on here before, but I just set up my new terratec 24/96 and got my mixer outputting something (it's amazing what hitting a few buttons will do)... so, to make sure it was working and enjoy the setup I started playing a few mp3s/oggs. Well, at first I thought it was just me, but indeed they sounded fast. Would there be some sampling thing I haven't thought to fix to stop it from playing the output just a little too fast? [linux-audio-user] FW: 2 way voice over IP

Hi, Ive been trying to get 2 way voice over IP working. I have 2 LAN connected machines. Ive tested soundcards and speakers on both machines with Alsamixer and all appears to be OK. Ive tried getting TCP_talk working but with no success. It appears to compile ok(with a little modification) and it appears to run OK but Im just not getting 2 way audio. Has anyone got any alternative applications that theyve had working or has anyone got any advice on this. Help much appreciated. Im new to this! R.C.

[linux-audio-user] Can't record midi

Greetings, O.K., I've read all I'm going to read. Now I need to ask you folks. I installed Sound Blaster live 5.1 under SuSE 8.1. Everything seems to work well except I can't record notes into Rosegarden or get RTSynth to respond to to my Midi Keyboard. I can *play* midi files in any midi program but when I record (in Rosegarden) and look into the track, nothing was inputted. In YaST (SuSE setup tool) it says to "pick the midi device you want to use". But the Window is empty. Also, in Rosegarden's Menu item: Midi--> configure midi setup --> Record Device: reads "(null device)" (and can't be changed). These two items leads me to beleive that there's a module (or modules) to load. I've spent days learning whole programs just to test if I'm getting anything out of my midi port. I've also read as much as I can about modules. But I'm still confused. Where do I start? I'm assuming that I look if the right modules are loaded. But after days of reading (both offline and online), nothing comes right out and says what modules are supposed to be loaded. Of course I'm assuming that there's a module that needs to be loaded. But I'm too new to this to know for sure. Any help would be *very* appreciated.
