the frequency domain and a highly interactive GUI to manipulate the

Hi all,
I asked this question on the alsa-user list but haven't received a reply
so I thought I would ask here.
I have two ENS1371 based cards plugged into the one machine:
root@sound:~# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [AudioPCI ]: ENS1371 - Ensoniq AudioPCI
Ensoniq AudioPCI ENS1371 at 0xa400, irq 10
1 [AudioPCI_1 ]: ENS1371 - Ensoniq AudioPCI
Ensoniq AudioPCI ENS1371 at 0x9400, irq 5
I have also set up a /etc/asound.conf file containing aliases for the
cards named "card0" and "card1".
I have also run alsamixergui with "-c 0" and "-c 1" parameters to set up
output volumes on the two cards (and the controls on the two alsamixergui
instances behave independantly).
However, when I playback a sound file using:
aplay -D card0 a.wav
aplay -D card1 a.wav
Only card0 produces sound. I have also tried physically swapping the cards
but only card0 produces sound. I have also tried the -v option to aplay to
confirm that the output is going to device 0 and device 1.
I'm out of ideas about this. Does anybody have any hints on how I might
get this going?

Linux: Because rebooting is for adding new hardware
OK. The noteedit docs say to set the environment variables QTDIR and
KTEDIR to the "path to your Qt installation" and "path to your KDE
installation" respectively. Those don't appear to be set by default,
and looking around on groups.google.com turns up a thread that says KDE
no longer uses KDEDIR or KDEDIRS, but instead there's a program called
kde-config that should be used instead.
From running "rpm -ql qt" I'm guessing that I should set QTDIR to
/usr/lib/qt-3.1, but it's rather less clear what I should set KDEDIR to.
Looking around for kde-config options, I infer that KDEDIR should be set
to what
kde-config --path ???
outputs where one of the possible "type" values replaces ???, but it's
not clear to me, even after looking at the configure script, what the
intent is. Any help would be appreciated. (Also, shouldn't the configure
script be changed to use kde-config itself, if KDEDIR is obsolete?)

Some time ago I asked at this list whether Audigy 2
soundcard works with hardware sound generation. The answer
was: "Yes!"
Today I tried:
sfxload 8mbgmsfx.sf2
A soundfont which always worked with SB AWE 64.
But surprising: The command works only 1 second. The
tse3play -list detects 7 MIDI devices:

I can play via all of these 3 devices with diffenet MIDI
players. But unfortunataly I can't hear anything.
I tried all rulers on alsamixer and deleted the
"M" symbols on to of these rulers: Nothing helps.
Any sugestions? Should I run "sfxload" with a certain
option?

I am about to compile rezound 0.8 beta on SuSE 8.2 pro.
As far as i know, rezound needs some slightely "exotic" libs to compile
(libfox...)
Could anyone please post a list of all the libs and of the needed
versions?

lee suggested PD, i would suggest SuperCollider.
i have written many supercollider patches to do this sort of thing,
but these are all in Mac - i'm still getting to the point of
compiling SC in linux in my "free time" (tm). (though closer now,
with debian unstable +alsa running on an older ppc!)
anyway, in either app:
one continuously running loop that tests (say every 0.1 second) for
an input volume threshold, which, if crossed, starts a timer and
starts writing to a buffer.
my SC versions write start and stop sample numbers into an array to
be accessed later.
second, a loop that tests if there any sample in the buffer, and
plays back accordingly, at rate*2 or whatever, or fft i guess if you
want to shift pitch and not rate.
third a loop that plays the default sample if nothing else is playing..
hope that helps somewhat...

For those of you who are interested in dj tools or tools for live
performance, Steve Harris has made a new plugin called DJ EQ which is a
three band EQ commonly found on dj mixing consoles. It's
currently only available in the snapshots directory.
You may also be interested in a new app we are creating based on the
code from JAMin. It's called jackEQ.

It is in its infancy but it already connects to JACK and has a one
channel (multiple i/o via qjackconnect) EQ and meter.
I would like it to be able to do all these things eventually:
unlimited channels.
jack port connection ala freq tweak style
route signal to monitor if monitor button is toggled for channel
independant monitor gain control (with meter) and output to alternate
alsa_pcm:outs
With the above I could use my four channel card as a complete djing tool
. You could also use a two channel card in a similar (mono) way.
The monitor will be assignable to seperate output channels than the main
outs. All the channels can be routed to it if needed. The eq's are all
adjusted before the signal arrives at the monitor.
This is how I intend to use it:

Hello all,
I've been asked by an animatronics technician for suggestions as how
they might go about solving a particular problem with a robot parrot
at a local theme park.
The robot's voice feature was designed around a PC/Windows platform
using Cool Edit Pro and scripted in Visual Basic. The idea is that
you say something to the parrot, it pitch shifts your voice then
repeats what you said two seconds later. If no-one talks to the
parrot for a while, it says "hello, my name is Sancho, talk to me".
Needless to say, they are having severe reliability problems with
Windows as it is being used day in, day out.
Can anyone suggest a suitable Linux solution for this parrot? I was
thinking about ecasound combined with a pitch shift plugin, if one
exists. If the solution could run entirely in RAM (CD booting,
perhaps?) then that would solve the problem of hard disk reliability.
